The Year I Turned 27
“We don't give in to the weakness”: My mantra when it's hard to get out of bed in the morning. I hear Ruston Kelley’s voice echoing in my head when I fight the innate urge to lie back down. When I feel like surrendering to the lazy voice in my head, I hear the melody start to play. And when I do give in and feel a deep sense of remorse during the late morning or early afternoon, mourning all that I will not have accomplished today, I remember to give myself some grace because “I’m just going through some changes.” It is not only sleeping in that these lines apply to. There are other aspects of my life that warrant this reflection as well. I’ve found it helps to remind myself that “I can do hard things.” There are more days where these reminders are necessary now that the sun went into hiding, along with you.

Dust In The Wind
The music of my year, was also the music of my life. Music to me was more than a form of art, it was a living breathing person. I lost a few people this year, and one of them was my uncle Mark. And as far as music goes, my uncle Mark was music to me. He inspired my love for music since as far back as I can recall. As a small child I didn’t listen to kid songs or anything like that, I listened to what he told me to listen to. He inspired music into the whole family really. He sang like a country music angel and I always wished he had tried to make a career out of it. Now I know that it was a wonderful blessing from God to gift our family with his voice. It wasn’t for nothing, it was for us and that somehow makes it all the more special. He passed and the first thing I thought of was the song “American Pie” because that was truly the day music died for me. It will never be the same, no song will ever feel the same or sound the same to me because he’s gone. And I don’t mean that it’s ruined for me, it’s just slightly different somehow. Maybe I will get over this part of it eventually, but all music makes me think of him. And I am grateful for that.

Music is what brings us together. Often, music speaks about the things we leave unsaid. It can be a way to get our true feelings out so they do not boil up one day and explode. Most people enjoy music. Whether you are into Rock or Country music, I am sure you will find a genre of music that suits you. Rock music is known for the faster tempos, while country music is known for the slower tempos. Most of the time, no matter the tempo, Rock and Country songs can be as beautiful as any classical piece. Other times though, the lyrics can make you want to be gone because they are so sorrowful. Too many people view these genres as if they are only for people in the backroads or folks who live away from densely populated areas. In Country and Rock music, the rhythms, subgenres, and composers can vary exponentially.
