Love is a wondrous thing. There are many songs written about true love, wishing for love, unrequited love, and even heartbreak when breaking up. I want to take you through the years along Lovers Lane with popular love songs from the 1940s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s.

This Magic Moment” is a lovely and timeless love song. It was composed by lyricist Doc Pomus and pianist Mort Shumand. The song was first recorded by American doo-wop and R&B/soul vocal group The Drifters with Ben E. King as lead singer in 1960. This version charted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In 1968 the song was covered by the American rock group Jay and the Americans. It was a success and charted on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Billboard Easy Listening charts, and rising to number one on the RPM100 chart in Canada.

A song that sends shivers with every note “When a Man Loves a Woman” is a song that was written by Calvin Lewis and Andrew Wright. In 1966 it was recorded by American R&B, soul, and gospel singer Percy Sledge. The song rose to number one on both the Billboard Hot 100 and R&B Singles charts.

A song that brings romance into one’s heart “Can’t Take My Eyes Off You” was written by Bob Crewe and Bob Gaudio in 1967. It was recorded by Gaudio’s The Four Seasons bandmate Frankie Valli. It became one of Valli’s biggest and most memorable hits and earned a Gold record. The song charted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

Among my most favorite love songs “Crazy” was written by American country singer and songwriter Willie Nelson in 1961. It was made popular by American country singer Patsy Cline. The song charted on the Billboard Hot Country Singles, Easy Listening, and Billboard Hot 100 charts. Making the successful cross-over from country to pop chart. It became Cline’s signature song and she sang it during a performance with the Grand Ole Opry cast at Carnegie Hall in NYC in November 1961.

Among the best of the songs recorded by The Monkees. “I’m a Believer” was written by American singer and songwriter Neil Diamond. It was recorded by the American rock band The Monkees in 1966 with lead vocals by band member Micky Dolenz. The song rose to number one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and became the best-selling single of 1967. It also made it to number one on the UK Singles chart. Later The Monkees band members played the song in live appearances, on overseas tours, and at reunion concerts.

One of the most beautiful love songs by The Beatles “Something” was written by band member George Harrison. It was recorded by the English rock band The Beatles and is on their 1969 album Abbey Road. The song received the Ivor Novello Award for the Best Song Musically and Lyrically of 1969. Band member Paul McCartney and British singer, songwriter, and guitarist Eric Clapton performed “Something” at the Concert for George tribute at the Royal Albert Hall in London, England.

I love this song from the very first note to the last “Stop! In the Name of Love” was written and produced by the main production team Holland-Dozier-Holland of Motown Records. It was recorded in 1965 by American girl group The Supremes. The song went to number one on the Billboard Pop Singles chart and also charted on the Billboard Soul chart.

A beautiful love song “Baby I Need Your Loving” was written and produced by Holland-Dozier-Holland of Motown Records. It was recorded in 1964 as the first Motown single for the American vocal quartet The Four Tops. It charted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. A cover version was recorded by American rock musician Johnny Rivers in 1967 charting on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and made it to number one in Canada.

One of my all-time favorite songs “Hello, I Love You” was recorded by the American rock band The Doors in 1968. It was quite successful and charted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It is featured on their album Waiting for the Sun.

Any love song by Elvis in my opinion is beautiful. “Can’t Help Falling in Love” was written by Hugo Peretti, Luigi Creatore, and George David Weiss. It was recorded by American singer Elvis Presley for the soundtrack album of the film “Blue Hawaii” in 1961. The melody is based on “Plaisir d’amour”, a popular French love song composed in 1784 by Jean-Paul-Egide Martini. The version by Elvis topped the British charts in 1962. It was certified Platinum by the RIAA in the US. The song charted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart and went to number one on the Adult Contemporary chart.
