Love is a wondrous thing. There are many songs written about true love, wishing for love, unrequited love, and even heartbreak when breaking up. I want to take you through the years along Lovers Lane with popular love songs from the 1940s, 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, and 90s.

“Blueberry Hill” is one of the most popular and memorable songs. It was published in 1940 by Sammy Kaye. However, its most memorable version is the rock and roll version recorded by American singer, songwriter, and pianist Fats Domino in 1956. It charted on the Billboard Top 40 chart and became his biggest pop hit. The song went to number one on the R&B Best Sellers chart. Rolling Stone magazine ranked it at number 82 on the list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

“A Kiss to Build a Dream On” is a song composed by Bert Kalmar, Harry Ruby, and Oscar Hammerstein II. It was recorded by American vocalist and trumpeter Louis Armstrong in 1951.

”Only You (And You Alone)” is a pop song that was composed by Buck Ram. It was originally recorded by the American vocal group The Platters in 1955. The song went to number one on the R&B charts and also charted on the Billboard Top 100 chart, In the 1956 film “Rock Around the Clock” the Platters sang “Only You” and “The Great Pretender”. In 1999 this song was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.

“Love Letters in the Sand” was first published in 1931, written by J. Fred Coots with lyrics by Nick Kenny and Charles Kenny. That year Ted Black and His Orchestra with vocalist Tom Brown had a major hit with this song. Then in 1957, it was recorded by American singer, composer, and actor Pat Boone and the song went to number one on the Billboard Top 100 chart.

“Earth Angel” is a song that was recorded by the American doo-wop group The Penguins in 1954. It was released as their debut single. It became their only hit selling over ten million copies. The Penguins version was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1998.

“In the Still of the Night” is a song that was written by Fred Parris and recorded by his band The Five Satins. It is at number 90 on Rolling Stone magazine’s list of The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time.

Put Your Head on My Shoulder” is a song that was written by Canadian-born singer and songwriter Paul Anka and released as a single in 1959. It became a popular hit and charted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

“Unchained Melody” is a song that was written by Alex North and Hy Zaret in 1955. North wrote the music as a theme for the prison film “Unchained”. The most memorable version of this song was recorded by The Righteous Brothers in 1965. Their version gained popularity once more in 1990 when it was featured in the film “Ghost”.

“Let It Be Me” is a popular song that was originally published in French in 1955. It became popular when the English version was recorded by the American rock duo The Everly Brothers in 1959. Their version charted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

“Sea of Love” is a song that was written by Phil Phillips and George Khoury. It became the only Top 40 hit for Phillips. This version made it to number one on the Billboard R&B chart and also charted on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The song was also featured in the film “Sea of Love” in 1989.
