Selena is back with another hit "Boyfriend" and does she get inspired by a Disney movie for the music video?

Selena Gomez released 3 new songs in the second week of April which are also the additional tracks on the deluxe edition of her latest album Rare. The song “Boyfriend” serves as the first single from the deluxe edition and the fourth overall. The music video for the song was released last week and peaked at No.1 on YouTube trending videos in multiple countries.

Selena Gomez made a came back on the music front this year in January with her album “Rare”. It did pretty well worldwide on the music charts. She released additional deluxe edition tracks for this album this month namely “Boyfriend”, “Souvenir” and “She”. All are very upbeat dance/pop tracks but we are going to talk about the song “Boyfriend” here as it is the single and also was accompanied by a music video. “Boyfriend” has a house beat vibe and an electro-pop chorus, the song was written by Selena herself and her very good friend Julia Michaels along with other writers. The song was written over a text conversation when Selena texted Julia that she wanted a boyfriend. She also wrote about the song on her social media that it's a fun light-hearted song that she made long before the current pandemic and also added that getting a boyfriend is not on her current priority list.

The song is a typical Selena Gomez song with breathy spoken lyrics accompanied by great beats and a catchy hook. Overall, I liked the song and it sure does hooks you up in a first listen and the beats are amazing for example you can turn up the bass and listen to this song in your car while on a drive, it's cool. It does have a dark and sexy vibe to it which we later find out in the music video of the song.

Talking about the music video I noticed a theme that resembles a twisted story line of a very famous Disney movie "The Princess and The Frog". Selena released the music video last week and it was trending all over. I loved the music video and I think it suits the song’s vibe perfectly. I was not expecting that she would go all dark and witchy with music video but it turned out pretty well and everyone loved it. The video is directed by Matty Peacock, who directs music videos for artists such as Billie Eilish and Carly Rae Jepsen. In the video, we can see Selena is all dressed up and looking for a boyfriend driving around L.A at night with a cage full of frogs in her backseat. What? Yeah, my first reaction was why there are frogs in her backseat. Then she went on to meet up her friends in the back of a very shady dry-cleaner where she picks up a mysterious looking glowing purple-colored vial. She then goes on dates with a lot of different guys who seem to not getting her attention and she was getting pretty bored that is when she applies that mysterious liquid/perfume on herself and turning the boys into frogs just before kissing them. She collects these frogs and takes off into the night.

I believe that music video is a very clever and interesting take on the Disney story where instead of turning a frog into a prince, she is turning her potential prince charming into frogs. Although Selena has not officially confirmed that the music video is inspired by the Disney story but we would like to see what Disney has to say about this fun and eery music video. Overall, I enjoyed the song and the music video but if it were to me, I would have liked if "Souvenir" was released as a single instead of "Boyfriend" because I feel that song is so much better and also shows her singing skills.
