Viduthalai Part 1 is a 2023 Indian Tamil-language period criminal thriller film written and directed by Vetrimaaran. Elred Kumar produced the film through his company, RS Infotainment. It is based on B. Jeyamohan's short story Thunaivan. The film stars Soori and Vijay Sethupathi. It was presented by RS Infotainment.

Viduthalai: Part 1 was released in theatres globally on March 31, 2023, to critical acclaim. On April 15, the Telugu-dubbed version "Viduthala Part 1" was released. Geeta Arts distributed the film's dubbed version. The film begins with a 12-minute one-shot that depicts the aftermath of a railway catastrophe caused by the extremist group "Makkal Padai" blowing up a bridge. The scenario illustrates the havoc, death, and damage caused by the accident, which resulted in many individuals being seriously hurt and many more being killed. Emergency personnel and government officials are on the site, and the State and Union ministers are visibly shaken by the magnitude of the atrocity.

The disaster is soon revealed to have been caused by "Makkal Padai" to protest the state government's plan to allow a mining firm to take over their hamlet for a project. The group thinks that the land belongs to the people and that only they, not any private organization, should benefit from it. The government launches Operation Ghost Hunt to apprehend the man responsible for the attack, Perumal, who is known as a ghost since no one has ever seen him, but people know he exists and plans such attacks.

Kumaresan, a recently hired cop, is on his way to join the Ghost Hunt. He has no idea what awaits him in the rugged territory where the operation is being carried out. The film is told from Kumaresan's point of view as he narrates his adventures to his mother. The police halt Kumaresan's bus for a routine inspection, and they discover that he is a recruit. Kumaresan witnesses the cops killing a man who attempted to flee on the bus with numerous bombs. The cops may have received a tip about the explosives and searched the bus as part of a random check.

Kumaresan is taken to the police training facility and assigned as a new driver. They are stationed in the hills, and the video depicts the harsh living circumstances and low pay that police officers confront. Kumaresan is from a lower-middle-class family and is seeking for a steady job to help support himself and his mother. He discovers caste and class issues and the convoluted alliances and rivalries between "Makkal Padai" and the government.

Kumaresan learns that obeying orders is crucial, and he cannot always assist the locals, which contradicts his kind nature. He discovers the meaning of bureaucracy and the importance of navigating professional life, particularly as a newly hired officer. Kumaresan is also drawn to the granddaughter of the woman he rescued, with whom he spends time. He finds it difficult to realize that many locals sympathize with Perumal and is perplexed by their religious system.

The police are unable to apprehend Perumal because "Makkal Padai" has infiltrated the community, making it difficult to determine who supports them and who opposes them. The residents take a stand against the cops, who have only used cruel measures against them. Kumaresan is the sole cop who appreciates the need to gain the locals' trust to apprehend Perumal. The film concludes with Kumaresan attempting to bridge the breach between the locals and the police force to apprehend the mastermind behind the attack.
