Reflecting Love Through Music
My favorite love songs
I am really not a romantic person whatsoever. Well, maybe deep down inside I am or at least I don't always let it show. I’m more of a realist and not a dreamer. Or so I like to think.
My favorite kinds of love songs are those that I can easily find relatable through the song lyrics. I just like a love song that feel real!
I also prefer songs that don’t really sound like they’d be love songs at first glance if that makes sense. Only when you take the time to read the lyrics, then you realize, “Hey! This is actually a love song!”
A love song should make one smile and provoke feelings of happiness.
Here are a few of my favorite love songs in no particular order.
Undisclosed Desires — Muse
Muse is undoubtedly one of my top favorite rock bands. I’ve fallen in love with the band and lead singer, Matt Bellamy’s vocals the first time I listened to them.
I think this is a great example of such a song that doesn’t seem like it would be a love song at first glance. The more I listen to it though, the more and more I feel that it is.
There is just something about this song that I just can’t put into words. It’s very intimate and provokes strong emotions even more so thanks to Bellamy’s dramatic vocal range.
Muse also has other love songs such as “Resistance” and “Madness”. I recommend giving those a listen.
Separate Ways (Worlds Apart) — Journey
I’ve loved this song the very first time I heard it! I don’t think I could ever tire of hearing this song and I could easily declare it as my top favorite love song. It’s also a very motivational song and is basically about someone still having feelings for a past love and only wishing the best for them even after moving on.
Two Princes — Spin Doctors
This is such a fun song! It’s basically about a guy trying to win a girl over. It is his hope that she’ll accept him, a poor yet genuine guy when it comes to love rather than the other pursuer who happens to have the money and maybe even the looks.
She’s So High — Tal Bachman
I particularly love the lyrics to this song. The lyrics are extremely honest and can even be found relatable. Not only is it about a guy falling for someone that they clearly don’t have a chance with — an ordinary guy falling for a high class, high society girl, but it is also about them falling for them genuinely and not just for their money or status. In his eyes, she is perfect.
Is There Something I Should Know? — Duran Duran
This is another fun tune that’s extremely catchy from beginning to end! This song is about someone having feelings for another and wondering if they feel the same way about them. It’s one of those songs in which I really didn’t think of it as a love song at first until I paid more attention to the lyrics.
Head Over Heels — Tears for Fears
I enjoy a few songs from 80’s alternative rock band Tears for Fears including this one! This song is about falling unexpectedly in love. Sometimes love can be quick to sneak up on us. Maybe you’ve found yourself falling for someone before you realized what happened.
“Something happens and I’m head over heels. I never find out until I’m head over heels.”
— written by Roland Orzabal and Curt Smith
On the Way Down — Ryan Cabrera
This song can be interpreted in two ways: as a romantic love song or one that is more spiritual as in love from a higher power. It is about unconditional love and reaching that low point in your life. Whether the one that saved them from their negativity was a sort of romantic love or a sort of higher power is for the listener to decide I think. Nonetheless, it is an extremely motivational song.
Follow Through — Gavin DeGraw
I absolutely love the lyrics to this song along with the many others from singer / song writer Gavin DeGraw. It is deeply honest, emotional and reflects what true love is supposed to be. It is about seeking realistic expectations with someone. It is apparent that Gavin DeGraw spoke from the heart with these lyrics.
Breathe Your Name — Six Pence None the Richer
This is such a beautiful song with amazing female vocals which make the song even more hauntingly beautiful. To me, it is another song that can be interpreted as either a romantic love song or as more of a spiritual love song.
Do any of these love songs resonate with you? What are your favorite love songs?
