Ray Ray Star Reaches Back: Turning Seventeen Years of Recovery Into Music That Helps
For Ray Ray Star, recovery is the reason he gets to keep making music.

More than seventeen years clean and sober, the guitarist and producer has built a life around opportunities that once might have seemed impossible. Now he’s putting that experience into songs that speak to people facing addiction—and to the families trying to hold on to someone they love.
His message carries weight because he knows the territory. The struggle, the damage, the daily decision to keep moving forward: these aren’t subjects he had to research to write convincingly about them. They’re part of his life.
That experience comes through in “One Step Away,” a song that remained unfinished until an invitation to speak at a Narcotics Anonymous convention gave him a reason to return to it. Facing people who understood his story helped him find what the song needed.

Released on September 26, 2025, “One Step Away” confronts the pull of addiction and the work of protecting a hard-earned recovery. It speaks to that uneasy space where progress can feel solid one day and fragile the next. Ray Ray doesn’t dress it up. He gives the struggle room to be heard.
With “Slow Motion Fall,” featuring Matt Pascale, he approaches addiction from another direction: a father watching his son slip further away.
That shift matters. Addiction reaches into entire households, changing conversations, breaking trust and leaving people afraid of what the next phone call might bring. The song makes room for those experiences—the love that remains, the exhaustion that builds and the helplessness of wanting to save someone whose choices you cannot control.

Its strength lies in its compassion. The father at the center of the song is watching someone he loves disappear, and the music stays close to that pain. “Slow Motion Fall” was named Video of the Day by TRV Countdown, bringing further attention to a song with a deeply human subject.
Then there’s “Ashes Next Door,” rooted in a loss Ray Ray experienced himself.
After a neighbor struggling with addiction passed out and a fire broke out next door, the blaze took nearly everything Ray Ray owned. He was left with two guitars.
For someone who had already fought to rebuild his life, the destruction carried a particularly painful weight. He understood addiction from within. Now he was living with the consequences of someone else’s struggle.
“Those experiences belong together” is the underlying idea that gives “Ashes Next Door” its emotional force. The loss is real, but so is his understanding of how a person can reach that point. The song allows hurt and compassion to occupy the same space.
“Ashes Next Door” earned him a Song of the Year nomination in the Rock Artist category at the 12th Annual Josie Music Awards. “Back From The Ashes” carries that story forward, returning to the work of rebuilding after life has been torn apart.

His support for recovery also extends beyond his recordings. As an official supporter of MusiCares, Ray Ray backs an organization that helps people in the music community through difficult circumstances, including addiction and recovery. It’s a cause closely connected to the life he has lived and the industry he works in.
What makes these songs connect is their willingness to leave the difficult parts intact. Recovery doesn’t become easy because someone writes a hopeful chorus. Families don’t stop hurting because they understand what’s happening. Ray Ray’s music respects that.
He offers something more useful than a lecture: recognition.
Someone fighting to stay clean may hear a familiar thought in “One Step Away.” A parent may recognize years of worry in “Slow Motion Fall.” Someone starting over after a devastating loss may find a connection in “Ashes Next Door.”

Ray Ray has had more than seventeen years to discover what a life in recovery can hold. Through these songs, he’s sharing both the cost of getting there and the reasons to keep going.
