Dear Vocal Readers,
Oh, K-12, how awesome it truly is. Making this list has proved to be very challenging for me, as all of these songs are amazing on their own. How can you judge something that's better than more than 75% of the music we are currently subjected to? Well, I did it, and now I am here to share my list with you. So hop on this roller coaster and let's go back to school (Ew)!
13) High School Sweethearts
This is a beautiful song. However, I found it to be the most lackluster of the bunch. Nothing stood out as particularly special to me and the tone and music just was too somber for my taste.
Favorite line: "This is a waste if you can't walk me down the finish line."
12) Orange Juice
As much as I want to love this song for its message, I just can't bring myself to do it. I truly cannot explain why this isn't one of my favorites. There is just something about it that I don't like as much as the others I guess.
Favorite line: "Your body is imperfectly perfect."
11) Lunchbox Friends
This is a cute song but I get sick of the robotic voice. Melanie's voice is gorgeous as is, and I wanted to hear more of that. The voice was cool, but it was so whiny that it got a bit irritating.
Favorite line: "Come to my house, let's die together."
10) Drama Club
I love the harshness of this song. Pointing out how people are actors and that they will go along with anything. I love a good harsh critique of humanity and this provides me with just that.
Favorite line: "You're faking all your pain, yeah, you're bleeding on a stage."
9) Wheels on the Bus
Such an adorable and catchy little tune this is! I love how childish it sounds while the lyrics don't match at all. It's a fun take on a children's song and gets PG-13 real fast.
Favorite line: "Don't be a dick and babysit, c'mon, just pass it over here."
8) Class Fight
It took awhile for me to fully appreciate this song, but I eventually came around. I can look back on my school experience and remember a bunch of fights that I was witness to. The song made me feel like I got put back in that environment and I could feel the tension.
Favorite line: "Kelly had a fat ass and trouble was cookin'."
7) Detention
This is a very unique song. It takes a turn into this sultry and seductive sounding piece once it hits the chorus and changes things up. Everything works pretty well for it and altogether makes a pretty good song.
Favorite line: "I can feel your blood pressure rise, fuck this tension."
6) Strawberry Shortcake
What a powerful song let me just say that. Being a woman myself, this really hit me in the feels. It's nice to have a song that isn't afraid to tell men to stop and to show women that they are not to blame. We aren't responsible for the actions of men, even if we believe we are.
Favorite line: "Just teach him to keep it in his pants and tell him to stop."
5) Recess
I love how this song finished off the album. It is so peaceful while also having pretty hard language. Leave it to Melanie to make such harsh lyrics into something so beautiful.
Favorite line: "People gonna try to tell you that you're fine with dollars in their eyes."
4) Nurse's Office
Maybe it's because I can relate to this song on a personal level, but this one is one of my favorites. I've been in that spot where I would just love to fake being sick so I could go home. I'm sure we also have all had moments where we wished we were ditching so this song scores in the reliability category. Also, the addition of the coughs was perfection.
Favorite line: "Give me that pink slip of permission."
3) Show & Tell
She makes being a puppet look damn cool. She showcases how she feels about Hollywood and fans and fame all in one neat little song. It's quirky and just the right amount of pissed off. It's haunting and will make you rethink how you view celebrities and make you wonder if you should really send that tweet.
Favorite line: "Are you listening yet?"
2) The Principal
The start of this song is one of the best intros I have ever heard. It captures you right in with the ringing and her quick lyrics. While directed at our current president it is also for those in positions of power who abuse it. It's line after line of insults and that is something not a lot of songs can get away with while still being, well, good.
Favorite line: What if I had told your mother, her son was a cruel motherfucker?"
1) Teacher's Pet
Everything about this song screams perfection. It tells a story, and its whole vibe is set perfectly. The addition of the fly noises makes everything so much more creepy and sneaky. It's a love story but one that is destined to fail and is mostly one-sided. It's the fantasy of a young girl turned into horror story, and it is so beautifully well done. From love to hate, start to end, it is straight up perfection.
Favorite lines: "Gimme back my money didn't learn a damn thing honey, from you. Except how to lie and cheat, while inside the sheets."
Well, there is my ranking of all the songs on K-12! If you haven't yet listened to these songs, then what are you waiting for?! And if you just can't get enough, remember that she made this whole thing into a movie. Yes, I know, she really is a double threat and is someone everyone should keep their eye on.
Sincerely from my K-12-loving mind,
Kacie
