No Plan B: KwDaGoat on Discovering His Calling and Building His Career in Music

Sometimes the defining moment for an artist's future is not dramatic but simply feels right. KwDaGoat’s moment came when he was recording his first-ever song. Soon, what started as a recording session helped him realize that music was more than a passion; it was something he wanted to pursue for the rest of his life. KwDaGoat shares, “The first song I composed wasn’t some life-changing or dramatic experience—it just felt right.” From that point forward, he knew without a doubt that music was what he wanted to do. "My first track will always have a special place in my heart because that's where this journey truly began," KwDaGoat says in reference to his debut song, "Feelings." He says, "Sometimes we forget how many people are quietly rooting for us." During a time when his own thoughts could make the journey seem more solitary than it actually was, their support became a source of comfort. When it comes to creative burnout, KwDaGoat takes a different approach: instead of forcing the music, he steps away from it. He explains that the answer is often to get out and live rather than remain in the same environment trying to create. He believes in relocating for a while, seeing new places, meeting different people, and experiencing something outside of his usual routine. A change of scenery, he believes, can give creativity the reset it needs. “Your brain is an incredible organ, and sometimes all it needs is a change of scenery to reset,” he states. Rather than treating a lack of inspiration as something that must immediately be overcome, he allows himself the freedom to step away and experience life beyond the studio. KwDaGoat's advice is simple: sometimes you have to stop searching for inspiration and go experience something. “Go outside, touch some grass,” he says. He continues, “The room isn’t doing anything for you. Go and live your life, and the inspiration will find you again.” For KwDaGoat, creating distance from the routine can provide the perspective and experiences needed to return to music with a refreshed mindset.

Looking back on what he has learned, he offers a practical perspective on entering the industry and encourages artists to take responsibility for their own development. “Man… don’t give your money to anybody promising ‘artist development’ when you’ve got YouTube and Audible at your disposal,” he shares. He believes much of the information aspiring artists need is already within reach. Rather than depending entirely on someone else to develop their career, KwDaGoat encourages artists to educate themselves, study the craft, and be willing to put in the necessary work. “Nobody is going to care about your career more than you do,” he states. His advice centers on being proactive and taking ownership of the direction of your career.
