Hip-Hop groups have been the foundation and basis of collective collaborations in this genre. There have been many honorable groups in hip-hop such as N.W.A., Beastie Boys, OutKast, Wu-Tang Clan and many more. In recent years, Hip-hop has been dominating with two most new groups both hailing from the south: Migos & Rae Sremmurd. They have been compared so many times because of their intense influence and energy of the trap music genre. This is a debate that has been explored a few times for a while, So who do I think is a better group?

Migos is a hip-hop trio that hails from Atlanta, GA. The group consists of three members who are related: Quavo, Offset & Takeoff. They formed in 2008 and for the following five years, they have released a countless number of mixtapes including No Label 1 & 2 and Y.R. N. (Yung Rich N*****.) What distincts them is that each member brings something to the table. Quavo is a great and catchy hook master, Offset is a clever lyricist and Takeoff has the great ability to translate any lyric into an unbelievable flow on any beat. They rose to fame after in 2013, they received a co-sign from rap superstar Drake when he was featured on the remix of their song “Versace.” Their known mostly for their distinct sound with trap music and use of ad-libs. Ad-libs are exclamations or onomatopoeias shouted at the end of a line in a song. Since then, they have had successful hits like “Look at My Dab,” "Pipe it Up” & “Bad & Boujee,” and successful albums like Culture, Yung Rich Nation & Culture II.

Rae Sremmurd is a hip-hop duo that is from Tupelo, Mississippi. They consist of two members who are brothers, Slim Jxmmi and Swae Lee. Swae Lee (Left) is known for using his voice the most in their songs and has been considered the frontman in the group. They are known for their party type and hype tracks and have a high energy when performing in hip-hop. They formed in 2008 and during their beginning time starting the brothers were homeless after their mother kicked them out of their house due to their schedules of trying to be rap stars conflicted with schooling. During this time, they were releasing hits locally and playing them at house parties including their own abandoned house they were staying in. In 2013, they moved to Atlanta after a friend introduced them to legendary prouder Mike WiLL Made-It. They were signed to his label Mike Will Made-It Entertainment & EarDrummers record label soon after it was finalized and appeared on his mixtape in December 2013. The following year, they scored their first breakout hit produced by Mike Will in 2014, “No Type.” Since then, they have had numerous hits like “Black Beatles,” "Throw Sum Mo” & “Powerglide.” And successful albums including Sremmlife, Sremmlife 2 & SR3MM (Sremmlife 3.)

Overall, both of these groups have deserved their place and their respect in the hip-hop game. They have clearly influenced the trap music and rap genre of this generation and have generated great party and turn-up hits for all audiences. I personally think they should both coexist and not be compared as much because they do have key differences that set these groups apart. I personally think Rae Sremmurd though is better due to the fact they can spread their wide range of music catalog. Don’t get me wrong, Migos is great and all but I feel they only stick to one sub genre of hip-hop and can learn to expand with their music. Both groups will still continue to dominate their role in the industry, but hopefully they don’t steer off the path of their influence.
