Mick Eddy Goes Back to the Beginning with “What I’m Looking For”
The first song he ever completed becomes a surprisingly revealing introduction to the artist behind "Strange Weather".

By the time a musician reaches their debut album, their sound has usually become more defined, their production more sophisticated and their songwriting more confident. Mick Eddy has chosen to go in the opposite direction, bringing listeners back to the very beginning with “What I’m Looking For.”
The Boston based singer-songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist wrote the track as his first completed song, long before Strange Weather began to take shape. That history gives the recording an unusual quality. It isn't trying to demonstrate everything Eddy has learned since. It preserves the instinct and simplicity of someone discovering what songwriting might mean to them.
Musically, “What I’m Looking For” is driven by guitar and bass, with an indie-rock energy that keeps the track moving. There is a deliberate straightforwardness to the arrangement, allowing the song to communicate without unnecessary decoration. For an artist now known for his hands-on approach to production, that simplicity becomes part of the appeal.
At the centre of the song is a familiar but frustrating situation - wanting someone to understand what you are asking for when, from your perspective, you've already made yourself perfectly clear. Eddy turns that miscommunication into the song's emotional engine. The frustration is obvious, but there is something more vulnerable underneath it. The narrator isn't walking away. He is still waiting at the door, still trying to be understood, still believing there is something worth holding onto.
That tension gives “What I’m Looking For” more depth than its premise might initially suggest. It isn't simply a song about an argument or romantic frustration. It is about the complicated space between wanting to solve a problem and recognising that another person may not approach things in the same way. Eddy brings his own personality into that conflict, acknowledging his tendency to want to fix things rather than let them sit unresolved.
The song's meaning remains deliberately open, too. It can be heard as a conversation between partners, but it can just as easily speak to the experience of feeling overlooked when the answer seems obvious to you. That openness allows listeners to bring their own circumstances to the lyrics rather than being told exactly what they should feel.
Perhaps most importantly, “What I’m Looking For” provides context for everything that comes after it. Eddy's later releases, including “Come Over,” “About You,” and “Hey Julia,” reveal an increasingly assured songwriter and producer, but this track offers the first chapter of that evolution. It is the starting line rather than the finished portrait.
There is something fitting about releasing it now, as Eddy approaches the arrival of Strange Weather. After years of developing his sound, refining his production skills, and building an album from an enormous collection of influences and experiences, he is choosing to pause and acknowledge where the journey began.
“What I’m Looking For” may be an early song, but it doesn't feel irrelevant to the artist Mick Eddy has become. If anything, it demonstrates that the qualities at the heart of his music: curiosity, honesty and a willingness to say exactly what he means, were there from the beginning.
Sometimes the best way to understand where an artist is going is to hear where they started. In Mick Eddy's case, the beginning is well worth revisiting.
