The music of Olivia Newton-John

This lovely and talented lady is a British and Australian singer, songwriter and actress. Olivia Newton-John who had won four Grammy Awards, had five number one singles, ten Billboard Hot 100 singles and two number one Billboard 200 solo albums. Her albums have gone platinum and gold. The music she sang ranged from pop to country to adult contemporary and she has sold around 100 million records all over the globe. She became very popular after starring with John Travolta in the musical “Grease”.

Olivia Newton-John came out with her debut album in 1971 If Not for You, This album included the singles the title track and “Banks of the Ohio”. This album included many cover songs from other artists including an interesting version of “Me and Bobby McGee”.

Her second album titled Olivia and a wonderful version of “Angel of the Morning”.

Olivia Newton-John had problems achieving complete popularity until she recorded the song “Let Me Be There” which earned her a Grammy as Best Country Female Artist. Her third album Let Me Be There in 1973 rose to number one on the Country Album charts and stayed there for two weeks. It included the title track and “Take Me Home Country Roads” as singles.

For two years in a row, she was voted Best British Female Vocalist by Record Mirror magazine. In 1974 she represented the U.K. in the Eurovision Song Contest singing “Long Live Love”. This was the year that Swedish pop group ABBA won the contest with their hit “Waterloo” leaving her in fourth place. The song was included in her fourth album Long Live Love the same year.

Her next single from the previously mentioned album was equally popular “I Honestly Love You” and this became her signature song. It also earned her two more Grammys one for Record of the Year and one for Best Pop Vocal Performance – Female.

Her fifth album was Have You Never Been Mellow and included two hit singles the title song and “Please Mr. Please”. This album was certified Gold.

In 1974 Olivia Newton-John was named the Country Music Association Female Vocalist of the Year. She went on to record the album Don’t Stop Believin’ in 1976. This was her eighth album and received a Gold certification from the RIAA. The title track was the first single released. The second single was “Every Face Tells a Story” and the third “Sam” which became her highest-charting hit on the Billboard Hot 100 chart.

She had another success with “Come on Over” and in November of 1976 she had her first U.S. TV special A Special Olivia Newton-John.

However, by mid-1977 her popularity started slipping and her album Making a Good Thing Better didn’t do well on the charts. This was her ninth album and the singles included the title track and “Don't Cry for Me Argentina”. That year she came out with the album Olivia Newton John’s Greatest Hits which went platinum.

In 1978 she starred with John Travolta in the very successful musical “Grease”. The movie became a box-office hit. The soundtrack album stayed on the charts for 12 weeks and included three Top 5 singles for Olivia Newton-John “You’re the One That I Want”, “Hopelessly Devoted to You” and “Summer Nights”.

After this, she decided to change her image and in 1978 released the album Totally Hot which included three singles the title track, “A Little More Love” and “Deeper Than the Night”. Other singles followed like “I Can’t Help It”, “Magic”, “Suddenly”, and “Make a Move on Me”.

The music and the success continued. Olivia Newton-John toured actively and in 2012 she went on an Asian Tour and an Australian and U.S. tour as well. As of April 2014, she performed at the Flamingo in Las Vegas, Nevada in the U.S. Then on August 8, 2022, she lost her battle with breast cancer and passed on at the age of 73. She leaves her music and movies for future generations to enjoy.
