Lizzo Might Just Be a Superhero

Move over, Beyonce.

I will be the first to admit that I was not the quickest to jump on the Lizzo bandwagon. As a pretty close to strictly-country music listener, Lizzo was not even on my radar in the beginning. And then it was as if Lizzo was haunting me. At work, with friends, at home—people were constantly asking me if I heard Lizzo’s song, talking about her, or asking if I saw her VMA performance.

Curiosity inevitably set in, and here I was Spotify-ing it up, then YouTube-ing, and fully free-diving head first into the Lizzo Vortex—where I found myself following her on Twitter.

Why, you might ask, did a 30 year old go from zero to 600 on Lizzo in a matter of (roughly) 15 minutes?

Because as a 30 something female who struggled with her own weight, self-acceptance, and learning not to rely on anyone to prove her self-worth: Lizzo is exactly what I never knew I always needed.

Lizzo is, essentially, a beacon of light for today’s youth (and us 30 somethings still clinging onto our youth), and pretty much society as a whole. When she stands in front of you on the VMA’s, giant inflatable butt as a backdrop, background dancers of all shapes, sizes, and for a lack of better word—backgrounds, telling you that she “Knows it’s hard to love yourself when the world doesn’t love you back,” you feel that. And when she goes on to say how she’s going to take the opportunity to just “feel good as hell—because you deserve to feel good as hell,” that RESONATES (and had this 30 something almost up on her feet and cheering back at a YouTube video in public).

Can we talk for a second about the fact that not only is this woman unquestionably captivating and insanely talented (please—try to listen to one of her songs, just one, and not have it stuck in your head for the rest of the week), but she is the epitome of an icon. From completely radiating beauty—the kind that is inside and out and downright shines through her—to being the voice for the voiceless—Lizzo is just what society needs.

Finding my own inner voice was an uphill climb; as a young kid growing up in the 90s and early 00s I had plenty of female role models to look up to—but the vast majority of them were the quintessential skinny, blond-haired/blue-eyed women and I, simply put, was not. I sought acceptance from my peers rather than myself, and especially from boys, which come on, ladies—we can do better than that. The music I listened to echoed my own thoughts of shutting myself away from the world or trying harder if I wasn’t living up to my own standards—until now. Enter Lizzo. The queen of making the best of your own life, loving yourself and your imperfections, and realizing that anyone who can’t see how amazing you are can SURELY find the door.

A-freaking-men, sister.

In a time where our current societal norms are yelling slurs, blocking out anyone who might be the slightest bit different from you—be it physically or otherwise, and basically constant negativity, Lizzo is essentially 2019s Superwoman—and I’m here for it. I am 100 percent on the bandwagon, and will follow her as far as she will take me.

In a society that is so focused on “the ideal woman," I can truthfully say that I am glad my niece is growing up in a world where Lizzo is center stage.
