Justin Timberlake is Not Bringing Sexy Back

Despite popular opinion.

I wonder how long it's going to take for the world to turn on Justin Randall Timberlake the way I did so many years ago. It seems like everyone is just under his spell, still captivated by his boyish good looks and his so-called talent. Well, I may be unpopular for saying this but I do not agree with anyone who says Justin Timberlake is talented or even a good interesting celebrity or person. If I must stand alone with these beliefs then stand alone I shall. Justin Timberlake never has and never will bring sexy back. This man is so entitled and mediocre that I literally cannot wrap my head around it, and I also can't wrap my head around the fact that people actually like him, they like his music, they like his persona, they enjoy watching his interviews, they send his songs shooting to number one AND he got asked to perform at the halftime Superbowl show 2 years ago, something that is only given to legends and superstars of the music industry. How can people think Timberlake is talented when he can barely carry a tune and he has never brought any creativity or long-lasting music to the world, he can’t even write his own songs! But above all else how can people actually support him after everything he has done to his fellow musicians? Appalling simply appalling, I am of course talking about his many clashes with none other than his ex-girlfriend Britney Spears, Janet Jackson, Prince, and NSYNC, amongst others of course.

Justin began his career in the 90s as part of the boy band that shot him into stardom, but nowadays you can’t even mention NSYNC to him without him dissing all the other members. Three years ago he went on record saying that he was more serious about the music which is why he had to leave NSYNC, they were holding him down. It's clear that he considers NSYNC to be not the catalyst that changed his life and launched him into a world of money and privilege no he sees it as an embarrassing hiccup in the inevitability of his super successful career. It is clear that Justin gives no credit to NSYNC, and is there anything worse than someone who forgets where they came from?

But the disrespect didn't end there, Justin Timberlake became incredible material for news headlines when he began his relationship with Britney Spears in 2001 who at the time was bigger than any pop star imaginable. During this time Britney was devoted to the church of Christianity which led her to publicly announce that she was saving herself for marriage, this led to her becoming a sort of role model for young girls who she said constantly wrote to her telling her that she gave them the strength to say no in sexual situations and be confident with their decision to reclaim their bodies as their own and have the courage and the confidence to do so. I mean if the most popular girl in the world is coming out and telling girls to stick to their beliefs because she was also saying no at the time then that really must've saved a lot of young girls from making the wrong decision too early in life. Whether Britney was being honest about her sexual habits is still up to question, but at the height of her success after Britney and Justin broke up what did Justin do? Only the thing any high school boy would do, he found the biggest crowd he could find (national television) and said to the world that Britney had been lying and their relationship was entirely sexual, the only problem was he was 22 at the time, not a teenage boy but a grown man acting like a scorned kid begging for attention. Now explain to me how someone can be so spiteful to the point where they would see the reputation that Britney had spent years trying to build and completely disrespect it and shatter it. Unbelievable. Britney Spears to this day still has never publicly said anything defamatory about Justin Timberlake.

Moving on we have the absolutely infamous Super Bowl halftime show performance. This performance went down in history so I’ll spare you the details which you probably already know, in summary, Justin Timberlake accidentally ripped off a piece of Janet Jackson's outfit on stage exposing her bare breast. This caused outrage and people were disgusted by the display of nudity during a family-friendly program. What happened afterward you ask? The NFL got stuck with hundred thousand dollar fines from the FCC, Justin Timberlake's career skyrocketed even more while Janet Jacksons was absolutely destroyed, she was banned from performing at the Grammys and while Justin barely even apologized or took any blame for the incident, Janet had to go on Oprah just to explain how sorry and embarrassed she was. What a double standard, Janet’s only crime? Being a woman of color. Justin Timberlake on the other hand? The world gave him nothing but fame and attention, how could the world have done that, seriously?

Now we move on to the Prince debacle. Here's how the whole thing went down, Prince reportedly said at a post-Emmy awards party in 2006: “For whoever is claiming they are bringing sexy back, sexy never left!" he was, of course, referring to Justin's hit song ‘SexyBack’. It is unclear whether Prince meant this in an insulting way, to anybody with half a brain, but to the rest of us with common sense, it is clear that this was a throwaway comment said in the middle of a party in the most humble way possible, clearly it's a lighthearted joke said by Prince, arguably one of the greatest musicians of our time. Justin gets all butt hurt about it and decides to diss him full stop on his next song with Timbaland ‘Give It To Me” he goes in on Prince singing:

“We missed you on the charts last week

Damn, that’s right you wasn’t there

Now if se-sexy never left, then why is everybody on my shi-i-it?

Don’t hate on me just because you didn’t come up with it”

How anyone could take somebody's throwaway comment as a direct absolutely devastating insult on their character and craft is insane. Only Justin would stoop that low. Speaking of stooping low, around the same time he decided he still wasn’t over Prince’s comment so when Justin accepted an award on his behalf at the Golden Globes he also decided to mock Prince’s height in front of everyone even though Prince has more talent and character in his little 5’2 body than Justin could ever even dream of!

Finally, we arrive at Super Bowl 2.0. This was Justin's chance to right all his wrongs, this was Justin's chance to show that he was the bigger man and give part of his special moment to the disgruntled musicians that really deserved it. I'd like to provide some context, with every single Super Bowl halftime show it is expected that the headliner is supposed to bring out a guest to perform with them, not for the whole show and not to steal their thunder, but another musician just to add a little more to the show itself. Beyonce brought out Destiny's Child for her performance, Coldplay brought out both Beyonce and Bruno Mars for one of the greatest and most exciting half times shows in recent memory, and most recently Jennifer Lopez and Shakira even brought out a multitude of special guest performers for one song. It is not written in the rules that you have to do this but it is expected it is what everyone does. But our friend Justin decided to not only seize the opportunity for the spotlight to be on him only, but also completely neglect to seize the opportunity of inviting I don't know maybe the band that made him famous in the first place NSYNC, or maybe even Janet Jackson and give her what she deserved, her moment! Free of ridicule and judgment! It would've been the easiest thing to do, Janet doesn't exactly have a lot going on right now, and everyone would've loved it, the public would've seen him as such a stand up guy, as such a great and generous performer, the show would've gone down as a great nostalgic throwback instead of what it was; a mediocre nothing that ended up giving more attention the selfie kid than Justin's career highlights. Instead of all he could’ve done he decided to pay tribute to someone during the show, someone who he later said on ‘The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon’ was in his opinion: “the pinnacle of musicianship”. He did a Prince tribute. A prince tribute ladies and gentlemen. The same Prince that Justin constantly insulted and ridiculed before his untimely death. Justin absolutely did not consider Prince to be the pinnacle of musicianship, seriously where does this guy get off?

All of this would be forgivable though if he was actually a great and talented musician, we’ve forgiven a lot more for a lot less. All I’m saying is it's crazy this guy is popular and respected in the industry. It would be a different story if this man was actually releasing hit song after hit song or even had a good body of work, something that would stand the test of time, music that actually meant something to a generation or even his fans but the truth is Justin Timberlake has produced nothing but mediocrity. His scandals are the only thing that has kept him relevant (he was caught holding hands with Alicia Wainwright), and his only great song ‘Bye Bye Bye’ wasn't a solo effort, it was NSYNC and not to mention he doesn't even write his own songs! What is with you people? Why do you love this man so much? Why do you constantly support him and listen to his songs?

And it might be an unpopular opinion but the only thing that Justin Timberlake has given the world was a few songs that are only loved because of nostalgia, and the ramen noodle hair trend of the early 2000s and we all know how badly that turned out for everyone who tried to pull it off.
