Why is Holi called the Festival of Colours?

Holi is celebrated every year in India, and it is popularly known as the festival of colors. People put gulal (colors) and water. Young children also play holi with Pichkaris. They use water balloons and herbal colors. Everybody is coloured in a different color. This is why it is known as the festival of colors. They enjoy sweets like Gujiya.

Like every year, people are ready to play Holi. Holi is a two-day festival that comes one day after another. This year Holika Dahan is held on March 17, 2022. In contrast, Dolyatra Holi is held on March 18, 2022.

People are filled with joy this year as it has been two years when people were unable to play this festival without any restrictions. Unfortunately, Covid 19 has stolen the charm of this festival. But, this year, vaccination has provided much relief, and people are ready to enjoy this day.

Why is Holi Celebrated?

Indian Festival Holi 2022 is celebrated every year. But what is the reason behind this day? As per Bhagavad Purana, the demonic king Hiranyakashyap became so powerful, and he wanted that everyone must worship him. On the other hand, his son Prahlad wished to follow the path of Vishnu. He was devoted to God Vishnu.

Hiranyakashyap’s sister, Holika, was ordered by the king to sit on a pyre holding Prahlad. Holika was protected with a cloak. But, the cloak disappeared, and she was burnt while Prahlad was saved by one of the forms of Vishnu, Narasimha (half lion and half man).

Holika Dahan

A day before Holi, Holika Dahan is celebrated. Holika Dahan is a tradition which is celebrated by burning an asur, Holika. It is celebrated by putting some woods into fire which represents that Holika is burnt in fire in which she practiced to kill Prahlad, her nephew.

Holi is the symbol of repairing Broken relationships. In a few parts of North India, the day is known as Holika Dahan whereas in other parts of India like Purvanchal (western Bihar and eastern Uttar Pradesh) and in Terai regions of Nepal the day is known as Sammat Jaarna.

Rituals and History

As per the Dasakumara Charita, Puranas, and poet Kalidasa, Holi is considered as an ancient festival of Hindus with its cultural rituals. The Holi celebration is also quoted in the 7th-century drama Sanskrit Ratnavali.

Holi is particularly the significance of the Braj region. this includes regions traditionally linked with Mathura, Vrindavan, Uttar Pradesh, Barsana and Nandgaon. These cities get splashed with tourists during the Holi festive season. During the festival the charm of these plays is miserable.

Other countries celebrate Holi

Holi is also celebrated in the United States. Holi is celebrated in Spanish Fork, Utah at Sri Sri Radha Krishna Temple, in New York City as Holi NYC: Festival of colors, and in Manhattan, New York as NYC Holi hai. In the United States people from various parts of the United States garner to play Holi.
