1. "Haunting" | L.A. WITCH

L.A. Trio L.A. WITCH (Collage Art: Talya Jacobson)

"In the dimly lit interior of a small nightclub, where the stale smell of a thousand extinguished cigarettes drowns out the smell of spilt beer and broken dreams, a band plays against a backdrop of cheap golden tinsel … The three women of L.A. Witch wouldn’t be born for several decades, but their sound transports you back to those warm Californian nights in smoky rooms."

As soon as I heard this track, I knew it had to be featured in the Friday's Five at 5 Halloween special. This trio from Los Angeles bring a cool, grungy reverb-soaked punk rock feel to the underground music industry, and 'Haunting' is dripping with old L.A. underground bar vibes.

The trio, which consists of Sade Sanchez (vocals), Irita Pai (bass) and Ellie English (drums), is mature beyond their years as their music sends you back to the 60's and alters from today's modern garage-rock bands.

Their 2018 EP Octubre consists of five grungy, rocky tracks that shows off Sanchez's smoky, sinister vocals and really encompasses the spirit of rock music.

"This isn’t music for the masses; it’s music for miscreants, burnouts, down-and-out dreamers, and obsessive historians."

Really cool stuff, and music I would personally listen to all year round.

2. "You're A Wolf" | Sea Wolf

Indie-Folk Artist Sea Wolf (Collage Art: Talya Jacobson)

Alex Brown Church, a.k.a. Sea Wolf, delves into the fantasy world with his lush tales of gypsies, wolves, and redwood forests, and his music is just as fantastical and magical as the stories he tells.

One of his most popular releases with over 12 million streams on Spotify, 'You're a Wolf', was released on his 2007 album Leaves in the River and tells a beautifully composed story of escaping to find more.

Sea Wolf brings an incredibly unique sound to the Indie-Folk scene and really believes in the individuality and originality of music.

"We're at a weird place in popular music where people are just recycling things, so I think it really just comes down to individual voices. Being back in Los Angeles, surrounded by other artists and friends and in the comfort zone of my own studio, has let me work toward being as clear as possible with my own voice. I felt inspired and rejuvenated, and I hope the album evokes that too."

Sea Wolf's music truly tells stories and takes you on a journey.

3. "The Autumn Carnival" | The Dandy Warhols

Alt-Rock band The Dandy Warhols (Collage Art: Talya Jacobson)

I found this song on a Spotify Halloween playlist and immediately knew I had to feature it in this week's Friday's Five at 5. Actually, hearing this song gave me the idea of doing a Halloween edition!

This American Alt-Rock band was formed in Portland, Oregon in 1994 and have had a series of milestones in their 25 year career.

Currently consisting of Courtney Taylor-Taylor, Peter Holmström, Zia McCabe and Brent DeBoer, these guys really understand rock and the elements behind good grunge rock music.

'The Autumn Carnival' gives me serious Nirvana feels, with grunge rock vibes and reverb heavy sounds, and Courtney Taylor-Taylor's vocals transport you into another realm.

The band is actually touring Australia in early November to celebrate their 25th anniversary. Sydney and Melbourne shows are sold out, however catch them in Brisbane or Newcastle if you can! Get tickets here!

4. "Ghost" | Bombay Bicycle Club

English Indie-Rock Band Bombay Bicycle Club (Collage Art: Talya Jacobson)

It wouldn’t be a Halloween edition without a ghost-themed track, and lucky for us Bombay Bicycle Club have delivered a banger of a tune.

Yes, it's from their 2009 album, but as a long-time fan of these guys, I can tell you their songs are truly timeless.

Throughout their time as a band, they have experimented across the folk, electronica and indie rock genres, and 'Ghost' is a great example of just what they are capable of.

Featuring the captivating vocals of Jack Steadman, the track brings something new to the indie-rock music scene and quite accordingly, the band have gained a huge following over the years.

Bombay Bicycle Club's long awaited album, Everything Else Has Gone Wrong, is due for release in January next year and will be followed by a tour around the UK and Ireland. Let's hope there's an Aussie tour being planned soon!

5. "Everybody Dies" | Kim Petras

Shout out to Friday's Five at 5 reader Olivia for this recommendation, and honestly can I say if you only listen to one album this Halloween, make this the one.

Kim Petras' latest album TURN OFF THE LIGHT released this year features 17 incredible tracks, some of which are instrumental, and all of which will get you partying this Halloween.

Olivia's recommendation, 'Everybody Dies' encapsulates the spirit of Halloween with the theme of, well, dying! Nah, in all seriousness I love the message this song conveys.

"Not everybody lives, but everybody dies."

Basically—you gotta live your best life. And to me, it looks like Kim Petras is doing just that. This German singer, currently based in L.A. is a TRUE inspiration to all independent music makers as she has been releasing her music under her own BunHead Records since 2016.

Wow, yep, cool. We love Kim Petras.
