Find the note! The WORST performances at Eurovision

The songs you use for a tea break

Eurovision has had its fair share of fantastic stage performances. Amazing vocals, visuals and inspiring songs have graced the contest.

Sometimes however, for whatever reason, a performance just completely tanks. From bum notes to bad staging, the performances in this article are the ones I feel are some of the worst the contest have seen on stage. I’m bound to miss many bad performances, but here we go!

Spain 2017: Manel Navarro- "Do It For Your Lover" (26/26, 5 points)

This song was not embraced by Europe, not even by Spain, who chose the song! The song itself is bland, poorly sung and extremely awkward. To top it off, Manel's voice cracks at the worst time (2 minutes 24 seconds in, by the way). Spain finished last, with not a single jury voted for this song and only Portigal saving them from nul points with 5 points in the televote.

Georgia 2012: Anri Jokhadve -“Im A Joker” (14th place in the semi final, 36 points)

I’m starting off this list with one of my least favourite ever songs. The song itself is already all over the place, but vocally and visually is even worse. An assault on the senses: it’s a wonder this scored 36 points.

Israel 2000: PingPong -“Sameach” (22/24, 7 points)

A stalwart at this point on lists of worst Eurovision songs and performances, this certainly deserves a place on this list. This opened the contest in 2000, and what a way to see in a new millennium for the contest! They advocated for peace with between Israel and Syria by waving their flags during the performance, so also caused controversy with the performance. The vocals are controversial enough: flat flat and very flat!

Estonia 2008: Kreisiraadio- “Leto Svet” (18th in the semi final, 8 points)

Estonia went for novelty that year, and I appreciate the wackiness, but its a pretty terrible performance. The three minutes this song trudges along on stage, it’s a real trip! I’m not sure if it’s meant to be a Baltic in-joke, but it’s safe to say it didn’t impress voters.

Switzerland 2004: Piero Esteriore & The MusicStars- “Celebrate” (22nd place, 0 points)

I covered this song as part of my review of all the nul points songs from the contest, but it has to be included in this. To be kind: what were Switzerland thinking? Who does this appeal to? Not even Kidz Bop would put this on a compilation album. Alongside the poor song, Piero is clearly struggling vocally to hold it together, and his backing singers are wondering why they wasted their time with drama school. MusicStars they are not.

Ireland 2008: Dustin the Turkey “Irland Douze Points” (15th in the semi final, 22 points)

Another novelty act and yes, I get they aren’t in the contest to be the best vocally: but come on! This is great if you’ve had a few gins, and that’s all im saying.

Azerbaijan 2011: Ell and Nikki “Running Scared (Placing, 1/25, 221 points)

Very controversial to put a winner on this list, but I stand by it. In my opinion, this shouldn’t have won the contest. Sure, it’s a top ten song, but vocally it’s an absolute mess. Flat and unimpressive vocals, this winner is highly forgettable.

United Kingdom on many occasions but specifically 2010 (25/25, 10 points)

Europe, we are so sorry! The BBC some years really couldn’t be bothered. The most Dishonourable mentions however has to be“That Sounds Good to Me”. I’d hazard Jemini (not vocally) was a better song. The song is very Dated, the performance is poorly staged and Josh Dubovie gives a vibe that says “I wish I wasn’t singing this song”. It was destined for last place and for this list. After using Andrew Lloyd Weber in 2009 who created a classic musical theatre style number, seeing our best place since 2002, we then opted for a song that wouldn’t chart in 1992.
