The basics

Linktree is something that more and more people are finding out about and using. Ever-increasing in popularity, not just with musicians but with bloggers, artists and content creators. Linktree effectively allows you to add together a bunch of different links into one handy URL. Want to add your YouTube? No problem. Want to add your Twitter? No problem. Having one link for all your links is extremely helpful. Not to mention that the URL is customizable as well. Which again is pretty useful.

Another handy feature of linktree is that you can also track how many people have clicked on your link. While on a free level it doesn’t show much info. It’s still handy to see exactly how many people have viewed your link. The pro version does offer more detailed analytics.

Some websites are great for adding a ton of different links to your profile. As musicians, most of our music isn’t just in one place. Sites such as SoundCloud allow you to add all your websites in a very neat and orderly fashion, twitch allows some key links. Which almost makes linktree completely useless. However, linktree is really rather essential on other platforms. For example, Instagram only allows one ‘site link’. Of course, you can always add links to your bio but this wastes valuable space and honestly, I don’t think it looks very good.

So as an artist it asks us to sacrifice our bio when we could add engaging information about ourselves. Sure you might have built a brilliant website that has all your links inbuilt in it and that would be fitting to use. Some musicians don’t. However, with linktree not only can you link to your own website but also to other links too. Such as providing fans with a quick link to your Spotify page. It speeds up the process and gets fans where they need to go much faster. It gives them a choice which is a great thing. So now using linktree on your ‘site link’ for Instagram you’ve given choice to your fans; an index of your work. Now that’s pretty handy.

Tiktok is the new kid on the block. Now personally I can’t stand the app. I honestly couldn’t care less if the app got deleted but you can’t deny it has a massive user base. If you distribute your music via distro kid or another of the top distributors, you can opt for your music to be on the app. You don’t need an account for this. So if you want to just promote your own music or you're an active user it might be a good idea to add your linktree to your bio. After all, Tiktok doesn’t have a great choice providing links for your account. Only allowing linking an Instagram account or YouTube account which may prove useful but not as effective as lintree link. If your planning on using this app at all I would seriously recommend using it.

How to make one

Like a snake oiled salesman I have probably sold you on the idea of having a linktree. So now I will show you how to make your own.

Start off by heading over to linktree

You will need to create an account on there before you can start editing your own linktree. You can either make a brand new account or sign up with Instagram. You can now also give you linktree as a custom URL for example mine is: https://linktr.ee/CharlieSmithMusic

Once you have created your account, you will need to add links.

This is pretty straightforward; you will need the URL of the link and also type in a name for it. You can use turn links on and off by clicking the green slider on the right-hand side or get rid of them completely by clicking the trash bin icon.

You can also edit the appearance of your landing page; picking an image and also adding a theme. You can pick through a whole host of them but adding your own requires you to pay for the pro version. I added my profile picture and kept my theme blank, as you can see below.

So there you have it, you now have a pretty awesome custom URL that can link to all your internet profiles. There is a pro version to consider however, I really wouldn’t recommend paying for it as it works so effectively for free. It is something you could consider if you want more detailed analytics or more choice with themes. Who knows maybe you stumbled across this link via my linktree, so make sure you get out on the web and start posting your new link everywhere!
