There is nothing quite like music. Whether you’re looking to boost your spirits, dance all night long, honor a friend who has passed away, nurture yourself after a heartbreak, or celebrate a new union, music can help to enhance the emotion of a moment. Of course, listening to music is only a part of the equation. There are countless people in the world who love music and wish they knew how to play an instrument. If you’re one such person, now is the time to take action and change your future for the better.

Whether you want to play a traditional instrument like a piano or something a bit more unusual, there are many options to consider. Look over these ideas and find the best fit for your musical goals.

Guitar

Perhaps the most-played instrument of all, the guitar is an excellent option to consider when you want to begin your musical journey. The guitar is simple enough that people of all ages can attempt to learn it. Of course, you’ll want to decide between an acoustic guitar and an electric option. Most experts suggest learning on an acoustic in order to understand the basics, but there is nothing wrong with learning exclusively on an electric. With acoustic options, however, you’ll need to invest in less equipment and accessories.

It is important to note that learning guitar can be tricky for someone who uses his or her left hand in a dominant way. This is due to the fact that the guitar must be held in reverse or be strung to accommodate the player. As long as your instructor knows this, it should not be too difficult to work through as a beginner.

Piano

Another popular option for individuals who are looking to play an instrument for the first time is the piano. For someone who is looking to get a basic feel for musical notes, chords, and how to train the ear to hear particular sounds, the piano is a wonderful place to begin. The biggest setback to playing the piano is finding an instrument to practice on. A majority of people do not own pianos and this can make it a bit difficult to learn to play a full piano.

Of course, there are several alternatives to help you learn this instrument. A keyboard is the most obvious solution, as this is essentially an electronic version of a piano with a few key differences. Additionally, apps and programs exist to turn a tablet into a piano and practice basics. This also has some limitations and shouldn’t be a fully substitute for learning how to play a piano or keyboard properly.

Unusual Instruments

Though the piano and guitar are common instruments to begin with, there’s nothing limiting you to these options. In fact, you might be far more interested in playing something that is unique. Though skilled, guitarists are everywhere. However, you’re not likely to encounter too many people who know how to properly play singing bowl sets. The haunting and entrancing sounds that these bowls can make are sure to capture your attention and make you curious about how you can use them in a musical way.

Budget Concerns

Money is sadly an obstacle for many when it comes to music. If you don’t have the funds to buy an instrument, then you may give up on your dreams. Luckily, this doesn’t have to be the case. When your budget is too tight for a guitar, look into a ukulele. This is a great way to learn strumming techniques and improve your dexterity without having to invest in a full guitar. What’s more, you can still learn to play hundreds of popular songs using only the strings found on the ukulele.

Playing an instrument can be a lovely way to get in touch with your creative side and discover new things about yourself. Look at all of your options and see what instrument appeals to your sensibilities.
