Merlin is a DJ | Producer and has just finished his 1st album and has been releasing tracks from October 2021.

He loves nothing more than creating electronica music and injecting positive energy into his artistry.

Candy is a track taken from Merlin's 1st album and it's certainly a cheeky 'Deep House' groove.

This track has had plays on BBC Radio and has been well received.

Building a reputation on impeccable production skills, good vibes and positive creativity, Merlin is set to release tracks throughout 2022.

Q. What 1st drew you to music?

[Merlin] I’ve always been making music from an early age. I bought my 1st decent computer in 2010 which allowed me to mix and master at home.

A real game changer in my music production was when I watched Avicii in the studio in 2012, he made a track called ‘Dancing in my Head’ using FL studio as his Digital Audio Workspace (DAW), I was hooked and have used FL Studio ever since to create my tracks.

Q. How did you arrive at your DJ name. Give us the scoop.

[Merlin] It’s nothing to do with Wizards! I love going to airshows, my favourite aircraft has to be the Spitfire and of course it’s engine is the Rolls Royce ‘Merlin’ Nothing quite like that sound!!

So, I have two project names which I will be releasing tracks under, Project ‘Merlin’ is more electronica, deep house sounds and Project ‘Griffon’ is trance and big room, again ‘Griffon’ an engine used in the Spitfire!

Q. Do you have a preferred or chosen genre?

[Merlin] I don’t really want to get stuck in a box with one Genre, one day I could be creating an 80’s style Synthwave track and the next a Trance tune! Really does depend on the mood or if I find a catchy vocal or melody to work with.

Q. Which came 1st, wearing the DJ or Producer hat?

[Merlin] I was a DJ 1st, then as I listened to tracks I was thinking how to break them down into layers, working out how they got various sounds and what percussion they have used and then thought about how to reconstruct them, I like to know how things work!

Q. As a DJ, Producer, how do you approach a song? do you collaborate?

[Merlin] I normally create a simple melody or vocal and build the track in layers around that. Sometimes when I finish the song if I’m not happy with the vocal (especially if it’s a vocal sample) I’ll collaborate with a vocalist to get it right. I’m happy to work with other producers too, sometimes bouncing ideas around in the studio is key to getting a track finished.

Q. Do you create and release or do you plan each release?

[Merlin] I normally create and release, only when I’m happy with the final mix! I hope to get tracks releases within 4 weeks of creating them.

Q. Tell us about your song “Candy”.

[Merlin] I stumbled across the vocal sample and thought I need to use it. It’s got some real nice synthbrass sounds going on, if you listen to my tracks I like to use lots of space and atmospheric sounds in the back ground, always like to include a bit of ear Candy. The lyrics could mean anything, I’m going to get myself a little Candy, does it mean a drink, some love, meet another person, who knows!

Q. How has the reaction been?

[Merlin] I have had a few plays on BBC Radio introducing and it’s been well received, I seem to get a more followers on Social Media after a play on the Radio which is great, I want to connect to people through my music and the feedback has been positive so far, if a few people like my music and style, I’m happy too :)

Q. Do you have any other plans relating to this release? A video?

[Merlin] You’ll find my videos on Youtube are visualizer style, I would really love to work with someone to produce a music video with actual people and objects in it! So anyone reading this who is interested get in touch, I have many videos for you to help me with!

Q. Do you create music for yourself or for fans?

[Merlin] I always go with what feels right at the time when I am creating and up to now this approach is working, I get regular messages across social media and SoundCloud from fans who are positive about the music I am creating.

Q. Which of your songs is, or do you think would be, fun to perform live?

[Merlin] My latest 3 tracks, ‘All in’ ‘Overload’ and ‘Candy’ would be nice to perform live.

Q. What song do fans seem to favor?

[Merlin] Candy definitely, I think people like the Deep House groove!

Q. What music do you listen to ‘for fun’?

[Merlin] I’m not too fussy, will listen to anything really, my CD collection contains mainly Ibiza classics, Hed Kandi, Avicii, MGMT, Vitalic, Daft Punk, the Beatles & Elvis!

Q. Are there any producers who inspire you? What qualities do you admire about them?

[Merlin] I keep mentioning his name but Avicii, he was a legend, I loved his workflow and ethics, he was such a nice and genuinely inspiring person. I still use some of his techniques to create my tracks today!

Q. What's the craziest thing that has happened to you on a gig, the road, in the studio?

[Merlin] I brought my vinyls to a set where there was only CDJ decks so had to borrow a laptop and create a set in record time! I like working under pressure :)

Q. Is there an instrument which you would like to learn and why?

[Merlin] I have always wanted to learn to play classical piano! I can play keyboard for my melodies but that’s pretty basic.

Q. If one artist were to perform at your party, who would get the call?

[Merlin] If we can have anyone past and present.. Avicii of course!

Q. How do you feel the Internet has impacted sharing your music?

[Merlin] It is a fantastic way to reach people, I’m just starting out but I love to engage and talk to fans and other Producers, I recently had a message from a guy asking what plugins I use to get certain sounds so I was able to share with him.

Q. What is your favorite/best outlet to connect with your followers Instagram, Spotify, FB, Twitter, iTunes? How would you want them to follow?

[Merlin] Instagram because it’s a bit more personal. Spotify for people to stream my music, YouTube for videos, but if you want to message me Instagram is easy and I generally respond quickly on there.

  • Instagram - YouTube - Spotify

Q. Are you currently working on any projects we should look out for?

[Merlin] Loads, I have lots of tracks I am working on at the minute and hope to release around 20 tracks in 2022.

I am also working on Project Griffon so expect to see releases under that name too!

Q. Did I forget to ask something? Something you would like to say, that I did not address.

[Merlin] No really enjoyed answering those great questions, I hope people enjoy listening to my music and any questions, feel free to follow and get in touch across my Social Media platforms :)
