In anticipation for the series finale of Atlanta, it would seem that a storyline from the spectacular show would have included Buddy Red. Son to T.I. and Tiny Harris, the country/blues/rock performer has something to say.

He just played a show at the Vinyl in his home city of Atlanta. A snippet of the performance would lead one to believe he’s a modern day Jimi Hendrix. But really, he’s got a sound and style all his own.

With a few chords played on the guitar, he demonstrates dexterity and even teased whether he’s able to talk and play at the same time. And he can. He seems poised and ready to pack out stadiums and shut down award shows. While he’s nowhere near the musicianship of Mr. Hendrix, it doesn’t matter. Buddy Red is his own man.

As he progresses through the industry of music, he will have company in his very own family to guide him including not only his rapper and singer parents but also talented siblings.

If Buddy Redd can know the mechanics of masters and publishing, touring rates, and other business related items, he should be primed to know just what to say and do.

His father’s trap leanings soon turned to trap pop. He knew how to reinvent himself after run-ins with the police and time spent in jail.

His own brother King has experienced similar situations like their daddy. But if Buddy can avoid all of that, he has a promising career ahead of him. The process of of turning from a fledgling artist to a superstar is often not overnight, unlike most fables of virtually speedy success.

What Buddy Red can do is learn from his own family the travails and triumphs they’ve gone through together. He can draw from all of that and craft a career and a life full of the power of music.

If he has the chops to be a singer-songwriter, then he should be able to direct his attention at honing his skills and never letting up on his reason for getting into the game.

He’s already been exposed to the lifestyle of a son of two millionaires. He understands the pangs and good fortune of growing up with brothers and sisters also interested in the game.

Once he fully establishes himself as a true artist, he will then be able to fortify his position as someone who knows what he wants out of the business of music.

By taking on an unusual role for a young man of color in these modern times, he may just burst onto the scene with something challenging, unique. If it is a problem for anyone else, it ought to be a solution for him. He can make that guitar whine and his baritone can certainly mesh with the plucking of the strings. While he has yet to fully throat out a power ballad or shown his aptitude on a piano or drums, he can’t be compared to the legend Prince.

There’s plenty of time for him not to be compared to anyone but himself. To keep on strumming and humming his way to the top may be in his cards. Or he might just play local gigs that could still satisfy his artistic soul. In the time he will develop his abilities, he will take himself out of the shadows of his family and create something special.

The fact that the Harris children including Buddy Red seek to form their own names and identities is laudable. They should be applauded for not turning into sponges or street urchins. Even with his brother King and his father’s interactions with the law, Buddy Red should be able to avoid any legal issues. He should be on track to being a force for setting an example in the lives of his family and the world.
