“Boone Plays It Back” Brings Blind Boone’s Legacy to Life in Cinematic Detail
Ken Lovern’s debut single introduces a sweeping musical re-imagining of a forgotten American virtuoso.

It’s easy to wonder how many great American musicians have been forgotten by history. John William “Blind” Boone is one of them. Born in Missouri in the years after the Civil War, he overcame blindness and enormous social barriers to become a touring piano virtuoso whose ability to hear music once and instantly play it back left audiences speechless.
That gap between Boone’s extraordinary life and his relative obscurity today is exactly what makes Blind Boone the Musical such a striking and necessary artistic intervention.
The project’s debut single, “Boone Plays It Back,” offers a vivid introduction to Boone’s world through the lens of Kansas City composer and jazz organist Ken Lovern.
Instead of approaching Boone as a distant historical figure, Lovern frames him as a living, breathing presence - an artist whose talent is immediate, theatrical and almost supernatural in its clarity.
The track unfolds like the opening scene of a stage production. A travelling company arrives in a segregated American town. Outside a newly built opera house, Boone’s manager builds anticipation for the night’s performance with a simple promise that borders on mythic certainty: Boone plays it back.
That phrase refers to Boone’s legendary ability to hear a piece of music once and reproduce it instantly at the piano, often embellishing it with improvisations that transformed the original material into something much more expressive and unmistakably his own. In Lovern's hands, this gift becomes the dramatic engine of the song.
"Boone Plays It Back" carries jazz, ragtime and classical influences and brings them together in a hybrid form that is both period specific and contemporary in its pacing.
There is the bustle of a touring ensemble, the tension of expectation before a performance and the subtle undercurrent of racial inequality shaping every interaction. Its certainly the music here that does the talking, layering rhythm, harmony and character in a way that is inherently theatrical.
A standout element of the recording is the featured vocal work by Madisen Ward, whose expressive delivery gives the piece its narrative momentum. Equally striking is soprano Alyson Cambridge, who portrays a skeptical opera patron whose assumptions about Boone begin to unravel as his command of composers like Chopin, Liszt, and Schumann becomes undeniable. Her performance adds a dramatic contrast, embodying the institutional gatekeeping Boone spent much of his career confronting.
Behind the scenes, Ken Lovern’s role is central. A longtime fixture in Kansas City’s jazz scene, he is best known for his work as a jazz organist with his ensemble OJT, which held a remarkable multi-year residency performing four to five nights a week at the Green Lady Lounge.
This extended run recently came to an unexpected pause following a fire at the venue in May 2026, and marking the end of a defining chapter in his performance career.
As a composer, Lovern has long worked at the intersection of jazz improvisation, American roots music and theatrical composition. With Blind Boone the Musical, he expands this vision into a full narrative form, writing music, lyrics, and story to reimagine Boone not as a relic of the past but as an artist whose ingenuity and resilience still very much resonates today.
“Boone Plays It Back” succeeds not just as a single, but as a mission statement: a call to reconsider an overlooked American pioneer through sound, drama and imagination.
If this first glimpse is anything to go by, Lovern’s larger work may do more than tell Boone’s story. It may restore his voice to the very center of it.
