Black Women in Music

There are many Black Women in the music business, that deserve highlights for there contributions to the music industry.

From some of the older greats, like.. Ella Fitzgerald.. Etta James.. Diana Ross.. Gladys Knight.. Dinah Washington.. Lena Horne.. Nina Simone.. Roberta Flack.. Grace Jones.. Minnie Riperton.. Patti LaBelle.. Billie Holiday.. Chaka Khan.. Tina Turner.. Donna Summer.. to name a few…

..to the newer generation of greats, like Lauren Hill.. Erica Badu.. Jill Scott.. Beyonce.. Janet Jackson.. Rihanna.. Missy Elliot.. Mary J.Blige.. the late Whitney Houston.. Mariah Carey.. Toni Braxton.. Alicia Keys.. and so many more!

From A (Aretha Franklin) to Z (Zakiya).. and everyone in between... black women, have made a undeniably Huge mark.. on the music industry!

But, for me… at this very movement, “I” would have to shine a Proud and Bright spotlight, on my very own niece… Nefertitti Avani.

My reason behind this particular choice, is because of the steadfast method and path, that she personally chose to take.. in breaking into the industry, that she loves.

From a very young age, three years old, to be exact... my niece displayed the very unique qualities of understanding certain things, pertaining to musical understanding. Things that you wouldn't expect a three year old to understand or even comprehend!

She has always been musically inclined, whether it was mimicking songs she'd heard on the radio.. or playing on a little keyboard, that her father purchased for her. A keyboard that actually became a pretty popular item, in the family.. not just for young Nefertitti.. but for everyone who would visit their home and witness in amazement, this young child and her talent to play and sing along, with what ever music she happened to be performing!

From that early age... she literally began a journey that "I" really don't believe most knew she would continue to be, so adamant and focused on sticking with, for so long!

Like many children do, at an early age... they are intensely focused on maybe "one" particular thing, for a period of time... and then, the next thing you know.. they're interested in something totally different!

So, as many of us parents do.. we sometimes don't put much energy behind our children's "first" strong interest, in any specific thing.

We simply, back and support our children, the best we know how.. until that interest either fades away, or moves into its "next" stages of, "multiple interest".

However... Nefertitti's interest in music, never faded! It never wained! She never switched up and became interested in "something else"!

She simply grew more and more interested in the art form of music.. singing, songwriting, instrumental cords, etc.. and since her father and her two uncles ("I" being one of those uncles) were ourselves pretty musically inclined.. she just sponged whatever knowledge we had to give.. and grew even more, from that.

She simply chose to stick with.. and steadily climbed a ladder of musical interest, until she finally reached the point of 'Musical Industry level' interest and what it took to breach that marker!

From that point.. she's steadily gained knowledge and insight on the particulars of music production.. mixing.. studio recording.. etc... continuing to climb upward, in knowledge.. towards this point, in her timeline of growth.

A timeline that "I" personally believe, is right on the cusp of being that new.. fresh.. superstar, in the singer/songwriter/producer field, of the music industry.

The most impressive part of all of it, for me is that.. with the occasional exceptions of input, from her father, my other brother and "I", every now and then... she's mostly done all of the initial groundwork, on her own!

Steadily, over the years… building her Own brand, without the help of any outside record labels.. record deals.. or binding recording contracts!

As an adult, she's literally created her own music catalog, by writing, recording and producing ALL of her own music.. from her own home! And THEN... she slowly but surely, she started shopping her creations to certain individuals within the music industry.. until she finally caught the eyes and ears of top name producers, the likes of Teddy Riley & Missy Elliot... along with catching the attention of top artist in the industry, like Snoop Dogg and Fat Joe.. to name a few!

She is now working along side many of those same producers and artist, mentioned above.. and to make a good thing even better.. she is also working with other top name producers and writers in the industry!

Word of mouth really does great things for you, especially if you have the talent and work ethic preceding you! And at this moment, in her timeline of growth... word of mouth is making the rounds, with the name Nefertitti Avani, on the tip of its tongue!

She is currently working on new projects for herself and for other artist in the business!

The moves she has made for herself, over the years.. has now put her on the cusp of breaking out BIG, in an industry she has not only, always been fascinated with... but has also always wanted to be a part of. And she’s done most of that groundwork, primarily on her own.. ALL at the age of… ooooh, wait… …that’s a taboo thing, right?… …giving out a woman’s age?

There’s a reason she’s the new “buzz” being heard, in many of the industry’s TOP producers and Top artist ears, right now!

To be a young woman, from Cleveland Ohio... being mentioned regularly in conversations amongst some of the music industry's, Top people... THAT... ...is a wonderful thing, indeed!
