Bitbird: a brief history, entire catalogue, San Holo, and more.

In 2014, childhood friends Sander van Dijck and Thorwald van den Akker founded to provide artists with something that they felt no label had ever truly offered them: full creative control and freedom.

They started by releasing music by an upcoming UK artist called 'Duskus', who has since been supported by some of the music industry's most well-respected artists such as Illenium, Don Diablo, and Tiesto, just to name a few. After releasing and nurturing other talented artists such as Taksa Black, the label released its first-ever compilation album "Gouldian Finch", in which artists such as BeauDamian, The Nicolas, Appleby, and EASTGHOST put released a few tracks in a compilation, which sparked significant success. The lead single in their first-ever compilation album, "Gouldian Finch", was Sander van Dijck's [San Holo] song "Still Looking", a track pushing boundaries in electronic music, which topped the Hype Machine charts shortly after its release. The"Gouldian Finch" compilation album paved the way to more compilation albums and sparked collaborations between the Bitbird artists which were later released.

Bitbird has since released multiple compilation albums such as "Gouldian Finch #2", "Gouldian Finch #3" and create together vol.1. The label has also put out other albums and EPs for many other artists, such as Sofasound, San Holo, and DROELOE. The label's most successful song, Light, was written and produced by the original founder, Sander van Dijck, under his alias San Holo. The song topped the Hype Machine charts shortly after its release. It also debuted on the Billboard Hot Dance/Electronic songs in #38 the tracking week of 17 December 2016 before rising to #26 the following tracking week and breaking into the top 20 the week of 31 December. The song was an important landmark for the label, it marked the first-ever Bitbird release to chart on any of the Billboard charts. The song, which now has over 165 million streams on Spotify alone peaked at #13 on Billboard's Hot Dance/Electronic songs chart.

Bitbird also has a radio show; San Holo Presents: Bitbird Radio, in which they have so far had 69 episodes. They often have guest hosts such as Duskus, TWO LANES, and Sofasound, just to name a few. As well as their radio show, they have two fairly successful playlists, which are updated fortnightly: Litbird [mainly upbeat EDM tracks], and Chillbird [mainly indie, chill, and ambient tracks]. These playlists have a combined following of over 16,000 users on Spotify alone.

The label has its own merch/clothing lines, Bitbird Essentials, and 'Bird Spotters Club', as well as individual pieces of merchandise for artists such as Flaws, DROELOE, and San Holo. They also recently started a unique initiative: 'Bitbitrd DIY'. The initiative encourages its fans to get creative and up-cycle some old clothing to make their very own Bitbird apparel or customize some of the labels merch! When posting their creations online, the label encourages their fans to tag them [@bitbird or use #bitbirdDIYhat] on the social media platforms, so that the label can share them, to enable everyone to inspire each other. Needless to say the two childhood friends Sander van Dijck and Thorwald van den Akker have come a long way since Bitbird's first release and they show no sign of stopping. They have always fully embodied their motto 'create forever' and they will forever inspire producers, artists, and DJ's in the community. [I'm sure of this; I am the biggest culprit!].
