Best Girl Bands of All Time

Who's the most talented?

This list concerns the greatest girl groups of all time. Artists such as The Bangles will not count as I consider them a band rather than a girl group.

10. Fifth Harmony

Maybe it's because I'm British and never watched the US version of The X Factor but I was never a huge fan of Fifth Harmony. That being said I cannot deny that there is some serious talent within the group, and they have released some absolute bops over their time together. "Boss" is a catchy tune with a great message, something I consider rather important when considering that their demographic is primarily young girls. "Work From Home" and "Worth It" are slightly inappropriate in this sense, however I have to acknowledge that the women in this group are just that, and they can't be relegated to singing just for children. What places this group in the tenth spot is that I find them far more compelling as solo artists. This is a group that was sort of forced together and I always found that they lacked real chemistry. I have no doubt that Camila Cabello and Normani are going to be huge pop stars and that Lauren Jauregui is going to do her own thing.

Best Song: "Boss"

9. Spice Girls

Considering how huge this group was, arguably the biggest and most successful girl group of all time, they're pretty high up the list and I'll get to why that is. At the time of their emergence, Spice Girls were the feminists that all girls looked up to. They promoted girl power, they were women in control, and best of all their songs were super catchy. I myself went to see the Spice Girls on their reunion tour and paid £140 for my ticket and it was absolutely worth it. However the reason that this group is so high up on the list despite me loving them and their popularity is that truthfully they aren't as talented as most girl groups are. Mel C had a really strong voice, but apart from her the rest of the group were pretty average. They also failed to realise that they were better in a group than on their own with none of their solo careers going anywhere. The Spice Girls are Iconic, nonetheless talent took a back seat to spectacle.

Best Song: "Too Much"

8. The Andrews Sisters

Speaking of iconic this is the OG girl group, the ones who started it all. The Andrews Sisters formed in 1925 and were at the forefront of the Rythym and Blues movement in music. They were known for their tight harmony's and swing music. The only reason they're this far up the list is because in 2019 they're a little outdated.

Best Song: "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy"

7. The Ronettes

The Ronettes placed nine songs on the Billboard Hot 100 in their time together, five of those songs made it to the top 40. Women of colour making it big in the sixties, how could they not be on this list. Not only that but they are the singers of 'Be My Baby' which is featured in one of the most popular movies of the 80s, Dirty Dancing. The Ronettes made waves, they were brave and unyielding and undoubtedly paved the way for later artists. The Ronettes walked, so TLC could fly.

Best Song: "Be My Baby"

6. TLC

"No Scrubs" will forever be a tune. There will never be a time where this song isn't iconic or feminist in any way. TLC made it big in the 90s capitalising on the popularity of R&B music at the time, and adapting it to suit their slightly poppy sound. The music of TLC has been around since I was a baby, and it really stands the test of time. I dare you to find one person who doesn't know the chorus to "Waterfalls." TLC are to this day considered the best-selling American girl group and in 2002 when the world lost Lisa Lopez, Thomas, and Watkins refused to replace her with anyone else and continued as a duo. That's friendship right there.

Best Song: "Unpretty"

5. Blackpink

This list would be incomplete without the mention of at least one K-Pop group. Girl groups and boy bands are dying out, and right now the only thing keeping them alive is K-Pop. Blackpink are a group I discovered accidentally, but with beats like that and vocals on point they're a band that I've continued to listen to. If you doubt their talent please check out their Coachella performance, which is outstanding, also they are the first female K-pop group to perform at Coachella. Their music video for "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" is the most watched K-pop video on YouTube, which is insane. These girls have some real talent, so check them out.

Best Song: "Kill This Love"

4. En Vogue

En Vogue are my underdogs, the most underrated band on this list. Due to TLC, Destiny's Child and Spice Girls being so prominent in the 90s I think it's easy to forget that En Vogue were there too, making all kinds of amazing music. The thing I love about En Vogue above all else, including their feminist lyrics and on point vocals, is that they dared to be a little different. They were an R&B/hip-hop group, but many of their songs were injected with a little bit of rock, usually in the form of an electric guitar. En Vogue weren't afraid to make their music loud and in your face, and that's why they're so high up on this list.

Best Song: "Free Your Mind"

3. Destiny's Child

One of my most vivid memories from when I was younger is watching the video for "Lose My Breath" and hearing that 'hit me!' It's ingrained in my brain, I can hear it now. Even though Beyonce is the biggest pop star on the planet now, let's appreciate her roots. When I say Destiny's child I mean the line-up of Michelle Williams, Kelly Roland, and Beyonce Knowles. These ladies killed it back in the day. They had a clear message that they brought across in most of their music and they placed a real emphasis on their voices, even going as far as to train a cappella at times. Destiny's Child may have been the best girl group vocally since the early days of The Supremes and The Ronettes. They didn't fall back on the music, they wanted to be the best.

Best Song: "Survivor"

2. The Supremes

All hail Diana Ross, the queen. The Supremes were made up of pure talent and were pioneers of early motown music. Over their time together they had 12 number one singles on the Billboard Hot 100. 12. That's insane. At their peak The Supremes gave The Beatles a run for their money popularity wise. There is no doubt that without The Supremes we wouldn't have all the amazing girl groups that we had, in fact we might not even have the music that we have today. That's all there is to say.

Best Song: "Come See About Me"

1. Little Mix

This will come as no surprise to people who have read my previous work. I, a woman who has a tattoo of Pink Floyd's Dark Side of The Moon on my arm, love Little Mix. Much Like Fifth Harmony, Little Mix were formed on the UK version of The X Factor, and went on to be the first ever group to win it, but unlike Fifth Harmony, these women have real chemistry. When they sing, they sing together. There is no lead singer, they are all equal members of the group, and when they harmonise they sound like what I imagine heaven sounds like. Like Destiny's Child they place emphasis on the vocal aspect of the group without losing that Spice Girls girl power movement either. Their music is excellent, their voices are incredible, and they really know how to perform live. Little Mix are pretty much the only girl group, outside K-Pop, that is keeping girl groups well and alive. Good for them.

Best Song: "Shout Out to My Ex."
