Ariana Grande's Positions Album Track-by-Track Review

Something about this album just screams champagne and kissing under waterfalls.

K-Pop sensation Blackpink is not the only people saving 2020 with the release of their new album in October. Ariana Grande also blessed her fans and the rest of the world with new music at the end of last month. Grande first released her single "Positions" on October 23, 2020, on all streaming platforms, including YouTube, where she uploaded the music video. (Don't even get me started on the Easter eggs in that video that shows a wide variety of representation and so forth). Fans of Ariana were so obsessed with the song that they even started a trend on Tik Tok that was similar to the music video where Ariana appears to be in the kitchen in one take and then in another setting as the camera shifts its position (no, pun intended) by rotation. I have to give it to Gen Z and even Millenials for putting so much work and creativity into their videos. Two words: chef's kiss.

The following week on the 30th, twenty-seven-year-old Ariana dropped her sixth studio album and titled it Positions. Yesterday, if not the day before, the Princess of Pop shared a story on her Instagram of all her new songs from her new album featured on the Top 100: Global. It's safe to say, no one doing it like her.

1) shut up

If there was a better way for me to express my feelings to someone who puts their two-sense into conversations that have nothing to do with them, "shut up" would be the perfect song. It's a catchy and cute song that makes me want to skip around in a ballerina tutu and slippers while skipping around and throwing birds at people who think they should have an opinion on anything that I do with myself. By the way, can we talk about how that ending sounds like Alice from Alice in Wonderland, falling down the rabbit hole? Or is it just me?

2) 34+35

By the title of the song, need I say anything at all. Grande once said, "if I put it quite plainly, just give me them babies." She wastes no time explaining her needs when it comes to putting it down in the bedroom. The number of times my mouth opened in astonishment at the "saucy" lyrics was one too many times, but who can blame a girl? I wouldn't recommend this song to get your groove on to because I feel like, in my opinion, it empowers women not to be ashamed of liking sex. There is nothing wrong with admitting that it is pleasurable and gives you great satisfaction. So, to all my ladies out there, don't let society make you feel bad for loving your body and enjoying sex.

3) motive (with Doja Cat)

"motive" gives me "knew better part two" vibes, with its laid-back, upbeat tempo and the lyrics as well. The lyrics from both songs are connected like a story because in "knew better part two," Grande sings about a boy who just wasn't aware that he had missed out on a good woman. Whereas, "motive" seems it's about a new significant other being in Ariana's life, who shows an interest in her and possibly treats her better than the other guy in "knew better part two." All in all, the song makes me want to go clubbing on a Saturday night, if we all weren't in a pandemic, etc.

4) just like magic

This picture basically sums up this song.

Ariana made the perfect song to help us all attract positive energy with her ethereal harmonies and her rich words. Most of us, despite the chaotic world we live in, are all trying to manifest good things into our lives, and this song describes what the power or the law of attraction feels like. It's not easy, but it takes time.

5) off the table (with The Weeknd)

I'm certain we've all been through something that has impacted our lives for the better, and sometimes, for the worse, in this song's case, that makes us question ourselves and whether or not we should put ourselves in those situations again. However, this is still a decent amount of hope that is left that our conscience tells us to take a chance on and give it a try. If that is something you relate to, then you should check out this song. It's relaxing when both Ariana and The Weeknd's voices are blended.

6) six thirty

If "you sure?" had a song, this would be it.

I know we all want the perfect girl or guy to do more than sweep us off of our feet. We want this person that we admire to love us for all of our flaws and be down for us, no matter what, as Ariana would put it. If you guys are unsure if a guy or girl is willing to put in the time and work to be with you on a daily basis, then this song is for you.

7) safety net (feat. Ty Dolla $ign)

Despite the rollercoaster that Ariana has been on in the past few years, she confesses that her new love has awakened her old self, and they have her head over heels in love with them that she is unsure if she should allow herself experience that feeling of love again. I highly recommend jamming to this kick-back or chill R&B tune if you find yourself in the same shoes as Ari.

8) my hair

Am I the only one who loves when someone plays with their hair? It's geniunely the greatest feeling in the world. In this song, Ariana makes it known that she treasures her hair and doesn't let just anyone touch it. If you're the one, then you just might get a pass. If you can relate to the soothing sensation you feel when someone runs their fingers through your hair, you should take a listen to this lounge-like song. (It's the whistling for me).

9) nasty

Ariana is finally deciding to allow herself to love this person that she has been questioning is she should let her guard down for. And now, she is ready to love them inside and out by profounding her affection sexually. Can we talk about whistling in the beginning? So, if you have that special someone in your life who makes you weak in your knees physically, this is the song.

10) west side

"west side" has to be my least favorite song on the album, but I like the beat. In this song, Grande is not shy when she says that she's "gonna make you want more," need I say more.

11) love language

Hands down, this has to be my favorite song. It's very distinct sound that I am not used to hearing from Grande, but I have to give her and the producers behind the album a round of applause for creating a James Bond-like or a modern seventies-like masterpiece. The beginning of the song sounds like something the characters in Sidney Lumet's "The Wiz" (1978) would dance along to as they skip down the yellow brick road. It's a vibe, is all I can say.

12) positions

Is there anything that women can't do? Honestly, I believe that God is a woman, no pun intended again, but this song just proves that women can both keep things in order while being a freak in the bedroom. Never underestimate the power of a woman. I wouldn't doubt that if Ariana did run for president, she'd execute the role. Period.

13) obvious

Could it be more obvious that Ariana knew that the love of her life was right in front of her eyes when she first met them? Some of us have had good hunches about people the first time we greet them by their actions or their way of words, and this song can vouch for that sentiment. One might call this love at first sight.

14) pov

This song suits the soundtrack of a bride's wedding, when walking down the aisle. Everyone knows that there is no such thing as a perfect relationship. A true relationship takes dedication, loyalty, honesty, etc. Despite the pretty and ugly moments, both partners work out their issues and stick with each other through thick and thin. Wouldn't we all love to see our loved ones' point of view of us through their eyes?

In conclusion, (I understand this is not a college paper), this album just might save 2020 notwithstanding all the madness going on in the world.
