An Introduction to A Capella
And an introduction into one of my favourite music groups : Home Free
For those of you that have not listened to A Cappella, you my friend, are in for a cool treat.
A Cappella is the singing of music, unaccompanied by musical instruments and it takes some glorious talent to pull this off well.
I have always been in awe of anyone with a talent to sing, and then to go one step further and be able to sing a tune, with no back up music, well it just blows my mind.
About 6 / 7 years ago I come across a very talented music group, simply by a video popping up on my Facebook page. I almost scrolled past it because it was a group singing country music and I’ve never been that interested in this genre in the past.
Thankfully I did not bypass the video, because it was through this video that I was introduced to a group called Home Free. This group has now become one of my favourites, country music and all.
Here is the original video that popped up on my newsfeed — there truly is someone, way up high, looking out for me and my musical experiences.
Without further ado, let me introduce you to Home Free and their rendition of Maureen Morris’ song My Church.
MY CHURCH
Tim Foust’s deep bass just floored me, Austin Brown’s voice made me swoon, Adam Chance and Rob Lundquist’s voices are perfect, but Adam Rupp’s vocal musical sounds left me in total awe.
This group is the full package and I proceeded to listen to every song they’ve ever sung. I’ve even watched all the episodes of their videos of the fourth season of The Sing Off, which they deservedly won!
Here are a couple of cover versions that they excel at.
How Great Thou Art - I’m not religious at all but this video gladdened my heart.
HOW GREAT THOU ART
Man of Constant Sorrow - this rendition really highlights Adam Rupp’s repertoire of music instrumental sounds. Listen to that didgeridoo, that’s not a didgeridoo!
MAN OF CONSTANT SORROW
Mom - get ready to be hit straight into your heart and possibly brought to tears with this video.
MOM
They are all great examples of the talent of this group, but then they blew it all out of the water, when they put out their own album called Dive Bar Saints. I immediately order the LP of this album and I’ve practically worn grooves in the record — the entire record that is. There is not a song on this album that disappoints.
Here’s the title track. Dive Bar Saints - be prepared to be blown away by both the music and the video on this one. Sheer perfection.
DIVE BAR SAINTS
My other favourite on this album is Catch Me If You Can — when I say favourites, they are all my favourites, but this one is that little bit more special.
CATCH ME IF YOU CAN
Now I could go on and on and on with these guys but I’ll leave it here and let you do your own research of which songs you love the most.
Before I do, I’ll boast proudly, to say that I was extremely lucky to catch Home Free live in concert, here in Brisbane Australia in January 2020. Oh, but a glorious night I had. My oldest son joined me — who by the way does not like country music, but has fallen in love with Home Free’s music from the moment I introduced him to them.
I do hope you’ll head off and familiarise yourself with the awesomeness of these five country gentlemen. Enjoy!
