The Cool Cafe: Cool Tape Vol. 1 mixtape cover

Probably you don't know that Jaden Smith has released two studio albums, three mixtapes, three extended plays, 15 singles, 28 music videos, and has made several guest appearances (according to the internet). And this mixtape featuring his also talented sister Willow Smith, among other artists, was his first one.

Now that Jaden recently turned 21 and released his new (and second) studio album called Erys(Syre spelled backward, the first album studio of the creative guy)I'm deciding to take a deeper look at his oldest work.

I have been a fan of him for a while now and I have to say that his very first tapes are truly outstanding considering the fact that he was really young when he jumped out from doing movies with his famous, renowned father Will Smith and doing collaborations with one of the biggest stars in the music game back then: Justin Bieber.

14 years old was Jaden's age when he basically started his music career by his own, releasing this mixtape, The Cool Cafe: Cool Tape Vol. 1(cool name though).

Knowing now that the young Smith has a wide artistic portfolio, I’ve found this particular mixtape from 2012, the album is flexing 18 songs including one of my favorites from Jaden in general, called “Cries.” So, a while ago, I decided to listen to the whole tape and I’ve found that the rhythm is really good, with a different and captivating beat in every song; but generally speaking, the lyrics are almost senseless. Let's face it, this album is so... 14, notably created with a teen mentality and age inequality, distorting the outside reality to a high school level, (or maybe middle school level) where all that matters, besides chasing girls, is being the coolest guy in the neighborhood. We see a kid very different from the 2019 Jaden with a stronger mentality, more mature (I mean, less immature), and a more defined purpose.

However, I have been able to rescue some fragments that I found interesting and deserving of a blog post, mostly because some of them represent, to me, something deeper than what Jaden (probably) wanted us to see in this mixtape, same 20 fragments that I'm listing down below today.

I must say that although Jaden can be a little bit arrogant in many occasions, he is so talented and worthy of admiration, emphasizing that this particular mixtape is generally quite good considering he was just 14 back then.

"Know Why"

20. “Said that I should wait, wait till I got older,

But love is a war and maybe I’m your soldier.”

"Down"

19. “Sometimes life is hard, don’t let love get you down.

Don’t do it girl, don’t do it.

You’re so beautiful but baby, who knew it?”

"Cries"

18. “Cause I miss you.

It's like sparks when I kiss you,

Girl, what's the issue?

We're fighting again.

In the studio I'm writing again.

Make it rain, cause it's lightning again.”

17. “And I'm hardly

The same kid from last October

MSFT* soldier.

Got a little older, got a little colder.

For

The better, whatever.

People say I'm clever.

[...]

And I hope you know I love you, forever.”

16. “I think, I could write a couple songs cause this stuff is straight out of a movie.

I could get lost in the music, but baby please don't lose me.”

*To make it simple, "MSFT"is basically Jaden & Willow's crew. Well, "MSFTS Anthem" is not my favorite song of the tape but in that particular song Jaden mentions that an MSFT is a rebel, "someone who creates, inspires and disrupts."

"Party On Venus"

15. “Here we go again in the stars with

The flying cars and, the Martians.

Someone get my ray gun cuz it’s time to start this.

Our beat’s the hardest.

Give me a star kiss.

And it feels like a light-year but baby girl I’m right here,

I could die here.”

14. “Then come dance at midnight, you’ll have a good time if you know how to live right.

I’m coming to get you.”

"Chase The Sun"

13. "We can chase the sunset,

Stare into the moonlight,

Let's dream of a love

That lights up the sky.

We can chase the sunset,

Wake up to the moonlight,

As long as you're here

I can stare in your eyes.”

"MSFTS Anthem"

12. "Old people say that we’re dumb,

Young people say that we’re fun,

Um, hun.

You should probably bite on your tongue,

Say that we lost but we won.

Um, hun.

Chewin' jokers up like gum, yum.”

11. “Hello kids, I’m not saying don’t get your college degrees,

I’m not saying to go and skate and break your knees,

I’m not saying to go up in your house and get the keys and

Run away without telling your parents that you gon leave.

I’m not telling you to be me.”

"First Time"

10. “It's the first time that I try to read your mind

And you've heard mine,

And this love will be sadder than when the birds cry,

And I think that it's great but is it worth dying for? No.”

9. “What is pure?

People walk around so insecure,

'Fraid that you said the word it, it hurts.

As soon as you had your first it's like you bearing a curse.”

8. “Girl, and I know you get me

Ever since you met me.

All those texts you sent me.

Wasn't lookin' for love, just lookin' for someone friendly.”

7. “I can be your Wolf, girl, you can be my Haley.

And I asked you why you runnin',

You said just so you can chase me.

And let's have a good time.”

"Find You Somewhere"

6. “I'm kind of lost now,

Been intervening, no meaning.

I have no cause now.

My heart is bleeding a tiny bit, I need gauze now.

I'm only pleading that you and me can be awesome,

But that's unrealistic.

Pain that you inflicted.

It's so wicked.

I'm addicted.”

"Cruze"

5. “I just wanna cruise with my dudes,

We ain’t got nothing to lose.

Breaking all the rules.

Talk about the news.

Talk about the cliques and the crews.

Messing up our shoes doing kickflips.”

I gotta say that this is probably one of the coolest and smoothest parts of the entire album. He’s just rocking it.

If you listen to the song (that I'll be leaving a link to it at the end of the post) you'll feel the vibe and you'll know what I'm talking about, maybe.

"Underwater - Too Much"

4. "Broken hearts that drown in underwater,

Hoping I bring 'em up to solid ground,

Tryna swim ashore but it’s getting so much harder,

Knowing that the one I love is not around.”

3. “I think I’m liking someone else,

But I don’t wanna hurt you so I’m right here by myself

[...]

Chest is heavy, I ain’t been confessing to nobody,

Man you know they know we broke up,

They ain't let me see the body.”

2. “If it’s too much.

Then I’ll just hold you and unfold you til I can find the old you

When we were so connected,

Our privacy so protected, my thoughts are getting so hectic,

Words carefully selected.

Teens love each other so reckless,

I couldn’t say where my head is.

Is it too much?”

Well, this is the end of this blog post, and I was undecided on which fragment to use as the last piece, I didn't know if I wanted it to be 20 or 21 lyrics, however, I decided to conclude today with the first fragment of the first song of The Cool Cafe: Cool Tape Vol. 1, the hook.

I know it is not the chronological order of the album, but I find the hook so submissive of the lyric of hip-hop, so ironically contemporary, that I would like to put it at the end.

So, these are the deep lines:

"Hello"

"Huh, hello.

Eh, hello.

How you doing there?

Hello,

Like, hello."

Thanks for reading all the way to the end, appreciate it.

Here's the link to "Cruze" for the mention I did to the point number five.
