10 Times Freddie Mercury was too much for this world

The front man of Queen was never short of expressionism or originality

Silly on set for "Calling All Girls"

Freddie Mercury never really fell from popularity, let's be honest. But he has once again become a household name with last year's Bohemian Rhapsody biopic and Rami Malek's Oscar for Best Performing Actor. One of the reasons Queen's front man is so adored is his never-ending confidence and panache, saying, "I always knew I was a star, and now the rest of the world seems to agree with me." Other bouts of expression include lines like, "I'm just a musical prostitute, my dear," and "I dress to kill, but tastefully!"

Always one to call people "darling" and "dear," he had a killer sense of humor and gave the air of never taking things like ratings and reviews seriously. He actually cared quite a bit, but Queen never had a great relationship with the press. They never fit in a simple musical category. They tried everything, just because they could. And they knew they were good! "We break a lot of rules. It's unheard of to combine opera with a rock theme, my dear," Mercury said (in reference to the infamous "Bohemian Rhapsody").

“The reason we're successful, darling? My overall charisma, of course”

Mercury was also never one to reveal what his songs meant, or to comment on the press's never-ending questions about his sexuality. “If you see it there, darling, then it's there,” he said. This could easily mean both any message fans saw in his lyrics, as well as what anyone may see about his sexuality. In short, who cares what he thought? He certainly didn't. He hated giving interviews ("Interview? Oh don't be ridiculous!"), but he handled publicity with an energy that never failed, even when his health did.

His motto: “The most important thing is to live a fabulous life. As long as it’s fabulous I don’t care how long it is.”

Feel like you could use some of that fabulous energy? Channel some of that cheeky sass in your day? Below are some of the top moments that make Mr. Fahrenheit more than we deserve.

1. The interview with David Wigg

2. No, really. The interview with David Wigg. Watch it.

3. Saying things that make yourself laugh

4. When the audience just won't pay attention

5. Stage hopping

6. Seat hopping

7. Getting in the zone pre-performance

8. This wink

9. Getting this excited over a bubble bath

10. Messing up the recording

Anyone who knows anything about Freddie Mercury knows that these barely scratch the surface of some of his most outrageous moments. I can imagine a whole new compilation based just on silliness/awesomeness on stage, as his performances were legendary that way. Queen never performed the same song the same way twice: "A concert is not a live rendition of our album. It's a theatrical event," he said. His goal was to perform, not just sing--to reach every single person in the audience as if he was there just for them and no one else.

“I love the fact that I can make people happy, in any form. Even if it’s just an hour of their lives, if I can make them feel lucky or make them feel good, or bring a smile to a sour face, that to me is worthwhile.”

Making the most of every moment, of every opportunity was what mattered to Freddie. Go big or go home. And in his cheeky words, "The bigger the better. In everything." He was someone who seized everything the world had to offer. You're never guaranteed a second chance, after all, and it was something he seemed eerily aware of. He wasn't going to slow down. "Don't Stop Me Now" indeed.

He never had a dull moment, even though he admitted himself on occasion that he was "quite boring, really." Still, he lived by the belief that "dullness is a disease." Always be original! And his life reflects just that.

So in the end, sass or no sass, always be yourself. "To thine own self be true." Although Freddie would probably just laugh if someone asked him what he thought of that line, let's be honest. Too much, Polonius. Too much.
