Vocal Spotlight aims to highlight standout creators who are changing the world one story at a time. We're getting to know the storytellers who inspire us the most, and we can't wait for you to meet them.
Creator Spotlight: Return of the Night Owl Challenge Winner - EJ Ferguson
EJ Ferguson has been on the come up as a creative writer for quite some time, and after diving into her work, the position of success she finds herself in now seems far from happenstance. Since a short story of hers gained popularity online at the age of 14, her work has been recognized by casual readers and academics alike. Now, at 28, still in the early stages of her career, it's really not much of a surprise that she's making some noise on Vocal – specifically with Vocal Challenges.
Creator Spotlight: Amethyst Qu
Amethyst Qu, if that is her real name (it's not), describes herself as an earth-friendly crystal worker—and that's just the start of her mystical presence on Vocal. Merely one of many pen names, Amethyst Qu prefers to keep her real identity a mystery, which only makes her spiritually-driven stories all the more intriguing. From crystal magick, to travel, birding, photography, creator resources, and more, Amethyst's author page hosts a wide range of stories that all stem back to the theme of mindfulness.
Creator Spotlight: Dane BH
Dane BH is a published poet and author based out of Massachusetts. A spiritual thinker and homey writer, Dane invites her readers in with somehow-familiar phrasing and prose. Like some of the greats, her work expresses the observations we know we've made, but just couldn't convey.
Creator Spotlight: 2021
Let's leave the obvious right where it is and talk about what 2021 wasn't. It wasn't a year shy of creativity; Suri Chan integrated her artwork into her poetry—creating a new layer of depth to her already-intriguing prose. No, it wasn't a year of missed opportunities; Call Me Les broadened resources and opportunities for engaged creators by founding The Vocal Social Society and the Vocal Creators Chronicle. 2021 wasn't a year when hidden gems remained unseen; the work of CJ Miller finally received the attention it deserved. It wasn't a year we took too seriously; Lindsay Rae Brown offered a lighter side to life with every story she shared. Though, it wasn't a year without legacy; Tom Bradbury left a legacy that will forever inspire creators in the Vocal community. It wasn't a year we took on alone; Culture Slate and People! Just say Something! exemplified the effectiveness of true collaborative efforts.
Creator Spotlight: Tammy Reese
Tammy Reese is driven to become the most well-rounded multimedia mogul that the entertainment industry has ever seen. As a celebrity interviewer here on Vocal, she's interviewed notable celebrities in music, entertainment, and pop culture such as Leon, Meagan Good Franklin, Slim & Mike from 112, and Sheryl Lee Ralph.
Creator Spotlight: Lilia
Lilia is a multitalented creator of fiction and fantasy worlds. While she initially chose the "safe path," studying at Princeton University and taking a job in management consulting, she now finds herself trailblazing a new one—pursuing the art and stories that stem from her imagination.
Creator Spotlight: Justin Douglas Lee
Justin Douglas Lee is a writer and poet who covers everything from science fiction, to music reviews, dog content, and reflections on his experiences with homelessness and mental illness. While it was his fiction that drew us in initially, one look at Justin's poetry and non-fiction pieces kept us engaged and confirmed his talent as an all-around creator.
Creator Spotlight: Casey Promise Thompson
Casey Promise Thompson is a mixed media artist, writer, and poet based out of Nashville, Tennessee. A studied virtuoso in the visual arts, Casey came to Vocal in pursuit of a new form of artistry—one that's been reluctantly placed on the back burner since middle school. Writing has always offered Casey a different sense of expression, and now she finds herself engrained in the endlessly supportive Vocal community.
Creator Spotlight: Tom Bradbury (In Memoriam)
Tom Bradbury was everything we could have asked for in a Vocal creator. He was diligent and intentional with his craft—always putting every ounce of genuine effort into his stories. He was a knowledgeable and patient resource to others—always teaching and lending a helping hand to fellow creators. He was brilliantly himself—always an authentic glimmer in the greater spectrum of creators on Vocal.
Creator Spotlight: Call Me Les
Lesley Leatherdale, or "Call Me Les" as she's known on Vocal, is a model creator—plain and simple. Gravitating around her larger-than-life presence on Vocal exists a collection of creator resources and auxiliary communities; each serving to promote the same creator-first environment we strive to foster.
Creator Spotlight: CJ Miller
CJ Miller is an immensely talented (yet equally, tragically modest) fiction writer based out of the lovely Massachusetts island of Martha's Vineyard. There, just off the eastern coast of the US, CJ prefers to stay off the digital grid, as well as the geographical one. We consider ourselves lucky we found her; and we suppose we only have the powerful characters she contrives to thank for that.
Creator Spotlight: Culture Slate
Culture Slate is a creative collective that produces written and audio/visual content around all things Star Wars, Marvel Cinematic Universe, and "the latest breaking pop culture and entertainment news from around the web." The collective consists of Chris Seekell (CEO), Clarice Quinn Taylor (CFO), Amber Hope (CCO), Benjamin Hart (CSMO), and their "crack team of writers" and other creative professionals. Hosting almost 1,300 stories on their author page, Culture Slate has proved to be one of the most prolific creators on Vocal—and they're just getting started.
