Mahatma Gandhi Biography
Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, popularly known as Mahatma Gandhi was a major political and spiritual leader of India who led the country in the non-cooperation movement in 1922 and Salt march in 1930 and later in Quit India movement in 1942 during its struggle for independence. Known as Beloved Baapu in India, Mahatma Gandhi adopted the policy of mass disobedience and non-violent resistance as weapons against the British Rule in India and followed a principle of Ahimsa (total Non-Violence). He endured several hardships, was arrested and occasionally beaten in his journey and struggle to Justice and Freedom. However, his struggle does not restrict to India itself, as the leader played a key role in the Civil Rights movement in South Africa and secured them the right to justice and equality. His birthday 2 October is commemorated as Gandhi Jayanti, a national holiday and as the International Non-Violence day across the world.

Amit Shah’s ‘history’
The Sangh Parivar’s hatred of Jawaharlal Nehru is perfectly understandable. At the Partition of India he stood by Gandhi and bravely fought back the rising surge of hate fostered by the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh (RSS). The RSS supremo M.S. Golwalkar’s plans to exterminate Muslims were detected, as the Chief Secretary of Uttar Pradesh, Rajeshwar Dayal, revealed in his memoirs, A Life in Our Time. Had he been arrested, as Dayal suggested, Gandhi’s life would have been spared. The BJP and the RSS still feel very uneasy about Gandhi. L.K. Advani got installed in the Hall of Parliament the portrait of one whom a judge of the Supreme Court, Justice J. L. Kapur, held guilty of being member of a conspiracy to kill Gandhi—V.D. Savarkar, author of the Parivar’s bible, Hindutva. Gandhi’s portrait there faces that of his assassin.

The golden temple
The site on which the Golden Temple rests has been a space for quiet reflection for centuries. Originally a small lake in the middle of a forest, many saints and sages have stopped here to meditate and dip in the holy waters. Both the Buddha and Guru Nanak have been known to have meditated here, but it was through the blessing of Guru Ram Das, his excavation of the pond and the founding of Amritsar, that it has become the center that it is today.
