The Northeast Tradewinds, which blow 80% of the year, caress 2000 miles of the Atlantic Ocean before encountering the tiny Caribbean Windward Islands, and then unimpeded, another 2000 miles across the clear, warm Caribbean Sea to Belize. From my front porch the air is often so clear I can discern individual trees on offshore islands 12 miles out to sea.

Once placed in the waterproof housing, the camera is untouchable for the entire dive, so there is a checklist I carefully work through before each dive.

At 93, Mom didn’t rage against the dying of the light. Her heart - big enough to raise 6 children; brave enough to sail the seas for 7 years; bold enough to live off the land in Northern Minnesota for 20 years; and robust enough to love the same man for 73 winters - weakened, surrendered and stopped.

Maya Cave Art or an Illusion of Time?
Archaeologists have long theorized that caves were extensively used by the ancient Maya as centers of ritual activity, seen as the home of gods and as portals to the Underworld. Xibalba (Shee-bal-ba) was the name the K’iche Maya gave to this underworld. The name Xibalba translates into ‘Place of Fright’, which hints at the terror, spirits and sacredness that caves infused into the Maya belief system. As such, the simple, crude and distorted faces and objects in Mayan cave art have long been viewed as part of the Xibalbá setting, in contrast to the exquisite lines and characters of the carved stelae monuments found at their ancient cities.

Here in Belize, the sun rapidly sinks on a near vertical path leaving little time for spontaneity.
