The Witching Hour
The night is dark except for the red tint that the blood moon is casting over the fields as the storm clouds roll in. In the cottage next to the field lives a little old woman who has been there forever. Her skin is thin and her voice very raspy and cold. Most would call her a witch, but she is really a creature of the night who can only conjure during the witching hour. When the clock strikes Midnight, she begins to chant and bring forth her dearest friends. Poor thing, that's the only way she has any friends. They have all passed before her, so once a week during her special hour, she calls to them and they tell her what death is like and catch up with her world.

Dixie's Friend
We moved to the farm when I was only 5. I believe that to be the perfect age because I was so full of questions and curiousity. It was a 20 acre farm with a huge red barn and there was a babbling brook that ran beside the barn and the house and then under the road thru a huge metal pipe. Momma would take me out with her to do chores every morning and would occasionally let me wander. I would always go with her to the chicken coop, because I loved feeding the chickens to make them leave their nests so we could get their eggs! It was fun being so careful and putting the eggs in momma's basket without breaking them. Then momma always let me break them when we were making breakfast. SO FUN! As long as I didn't break any, momma would let me go to the barn to find poppa and let him know we were going in to make breakfast. He was always feeding the horse and cow. And then would milk the cow to bring in milk for breakfast. This one morning I spotted something move very high up in the barn. "What was that, Pappa?" I asked. "That is our barn owl. He gets rid of mice, rats and harmful snakes for us." he answered. "But stay clear of him, because they have a very sharp beak and claws. And he doesn't know you". I ran into the house as quickly as my little legs would carry me.

Sally Loves Tommy
Sally and Tommy were all aglow when they got home late the next Sunday. No one had heard from them except for the "Wish You Were Here" post cards they all had gotten on Saturday. Instead of using the extra money they had been given as wedding presents and such for being extravagant, they had used it to shop and get wonderful souvenirs for their families, friends AND themselves and the baby. They had flown home, so they bought the biggest set of luggage they could find and packed it onto the plane. Thomas thought the bags would never stop coming!! He was glad he had brought the truck. :-)

Sleep Apnea
My New Year's Resolution is to find good, restful sleep... for a better Tanya! I was diagnosed with sleep apnea when I was almost 31 years old, but I'm sure it has been there all of my life, just like the bipolar disorder has been. When I was diagnosed, my doctor told me that if I lost weight it would help the apnea. I told him that if he could do something about the apnea, my metabolism would rise and I would lose weight. He always argued that point with me. I fought with the CPAP and my anxieties for over a year and then I just quit. If I was able to fall asleep with it on my face, I would tear it off in the middle of the night or I would wake in a panic, because it felt like someone had a pillow over my face. There are many people that have issues with the machine, so they just don't use it. Can you imagine trying to sleep with a hose hooking you to a machine that is blowing a significant Constant Positive Air Pressure into your mouth and/or nose??? :-( Think about it! BUT the alternative is to sleep knowing that you stop breathing every 5 minutes or so and the longest "apnea" was 45 seconds....those were pretty much my results. Scary, huh? I can't even hold my breath for 45 seconds, how can that happen when I'm sleeping and me not even know about it?? Crazzzzy, right?

Sally Loves Tommy
The day of the wedding came with no word from Sally's family. Tommy and Sally were so excited that they didn't let that dampen their big day! Sally had bought and beautiful white dress and made a couple of alterations to make it her own. Tommy wore a dark blue suit and a smile that lit up the whole ceremony. He had bought Sally a beautiful bouquet of many different layers. He told Sally that it represented all of the reasons he loved her and how original that made their love and their wedding. She took one of the roses from the bouquet and pinned it on Tommy's lapel and told him that was only a small portion of the specialness of who he was to her. They walked down the aisles of the little country church and said their vows with the preacher of Tommy and Thomas' church, Brother Michael McAdoo & wife Matelda, and Thomas SR in attendance. It was a beautiful, loving and simple ceremony, just like the couple wanted. As they opened the church doors to leave, they were surprised to see Sally's family at the foot of the stairs. Sally ran down the stairs and hugged her brother and sister and then her father and stepmother. "Why didn't you come in and celebrate with us?" Sally asked.

Sally Loves Tommy
She didn't tell Tommy what she had seen. She had hope that she would make up with her parents and didn't want Tommy any more upset with them, than he already was. They rode in silence, Tommy wanted Sally to be able to get her thoughts together, so he drove to the park. Once there, he got out and opened her door. He took her hand in his and said, "Let's walk and talk about where you want to go from here." She responded, "I really haven't thought about the particulars. I thought we should talk it out together. I know I don't want you to feel pressured into anything, so I would like to hear your thoughts." "Well, last night you proposed", he began, "remember that?" She shook her head, of course she remembered. "So when I got home, I began to make plans for US" I spoke with Pops and he thought we were moving a little fast. I told him exactly how I feel about you and he understood. He said that he had fallen in love with you when you met too. :-) His suggestion was, we both complete our college education and live with him and help at the restaurant part-time to save for our own place once we graduated. I didn't tell him anything about what happened with your parents, because I hope we can work that out and be civil for you, at least!" Sally squealed and wrapped her arms around Tommy's neck. "I love you, Tommy White! More than you will ever know!!" "NO, I completely know!! Because I love you just like that too!" he hugged her tight and kissed her deep. They went and sat on a bench and talked about the future starting with today. Then they took her things to Tommy's house and got her settled in. After that they went to the restaurant for lunch and to update Pops. He was all smiles when Sally walked in with his son. "What's this I hear that you are in love with my son?" He laughed and hugged her as he said, "He is most definitely in love with you too, young lady! And I couldn't be any happier with his decision!" "That is very sweet of you, Mr. White." said Sally. "Mr. White?!? You are family now! You call me Pops, just like everybody else around here does!!" Pops went to the kitchen and cooked the 3 of them some lunch so they could sit down and discuss what was next. While pops was cooking, Sally and Tommy came up with something to tell him why Sally was already moved in, so he wouldn't know about what Sally's dad had said to Tommy. They wanted him to like Sally's parents whenever they got to meet. :-)

Sally loves Tommy
Sally always felt safe in Tommy's warm embrace, and tonight was no different. Her mind wandered to the first day they met. She was late for class, running down the hall and ran right into him. Not hard enough to knock him down, but hard enough to send her books and papers flying everywhere. Tommy was apologizing and picking up as much as he could. When his brown eyes met her blue eyes, it was love at first sight!! Neither of them believed in that kind of thing, so they brushed it off right away. "There is no need for you to apologize, I ran over you. It is I who apologizes to you, kind sir." Sally giggled as she curtsied. "I sure hope we got everything and you're not too late for class, my lady" Tommy followed her lead and bowed deep. They both laughed and shook hands. "Hi, I'm Sally Rollins and I have never seen you around. I thought I knew most everyone here at MTSU." "I am Tommy White and I am VERY pleased to make your acquaintance! I've only been here a couple weeks and most of my classes are across campus. I was over here looking to possibly see about getting into a new English class. The professor and I have already clashed where I am." "How cool. I was just heading to Miss Leach's room . Trust me, she is NOT what her name sounds like...wait and see. Come with me!" said Sally. Tom took all of the heavy books from Sally and let her carry the files and papers, so that she could sort through them while he spoke to Miss Leach. After class, Tommy was still standing in the hallway waiting for Sally. He wanted to help her carry her load and asked if they could go have a cup of coffee and get to know each other. She said, "Abso-freakin'-lutely!!" He thought that was hilarious and the rest is history.....

The writer in me
This is the very first thing I ever actually wrote and "published" https://vocal.media/fiction/sweetest-love-eyl8os00sr and that was only a couple months ago. I wrote it as a fluke really, but loved the process of thinking it up and putting it down in the computer. Sure, I wrote poems when I was a teenager and they were full of teenage angst and morbid thoughts. Maybe I will find them one day and put them here too....maybe not.

T.H.E.M
It was a dark and stormy night, when the newlyweds came back from their honeymoon to their newly purchased cottage. They ran to the porch at the back of the cottage with newspapers over their heads. Sharon giggled and said, "I feel just like Brad and Janet from that movie...what was it called?" "Rocky Horror Picture Show" Todd said, rather matter-of-factly. "And that couple wasn't married yet. I am the happiest man in the world! May I carry my beautiful wife over our first threshold?" "Why, of course, my handsome husband! I am the luckiest girl in the world!" Todd lifted her with ease. "He worked out way too regularly, sometimes" Sharon thought. But she also loved being in his strong arms like this. She felt SO safe with Todd! She opened the door as he carried her into their cottage and sat her down and kissed her deeply. Before they found the light switch, they could hear scurrying. Sounded bigger than mice. But when the light was on, there was nothing in sight. "What in the world could that have been?" Sharon had jumped back into Todd's arms. He laughed and said, "They scurried away. They are more afraid of us and will find somewhere to go now that we are home." She slowly put her feet back on the floor. "Will you go check the bathroom so that I can get a shower and clean up, while you bring the bags and stuff in? Then I can unpack and get dressed for our first night in our first little home, while you get a shower." "Sounds like a plan!" says Todd as he struts to the bathroom. He turns on the light and screams like a little girl. Sharon comes running in to see what there was. "Todd was standing behind the door and jumped out to scare her. "I thought you were too scared! If you had been, you would have run to the car, not in here to save me." He said. "But I love my husband and would never send him in where I could lose him without having his back!" Sharon replied. "And that's why I married you!" Todd replied "Now go get my luggage, slave!" she hugged him, giggling at that thought. Todd got their luggage and all was quiet for the next couple days.

The Garden
As I walked into the forest, there was a stone doorway. It was very elaborately made and looked as if you touched it, it would fall apart. As I walked through this beautiful doorway, I saw and smelled the most beautiful world imaginable! I smelled Honeysuckle, Lilac, Lavender, Roses and Gardenia. It was heavenly! And they were the most brilliantly, vivid colors I had ever seen! The sun was shining bright and there was a slight cool breeze carrying the scents to me. I bent over to smell a beautiful, deep red rose and it seemed to shy away from me, as if scared. "What' wrong", I asked. The little rose raised it's head a little and replied, "I was afraid that you wanted to pick me. And then I would die"

The Animal Party
As the sun rose on a beautiful Autumn day, the animals began to wake to the cock-a-doodle-do's of the big red rooster who had woken them every day for the last ten years. The farmer had brought him home from a farm down the road, about the same time he had gotten the pigs, the sheep, and the goats. The farmer and his wife had only had this farm for a year, and decided they were ready to make it an animal farm and not just one to grow hay. A farm need more noises, smells and LIFE, the farmer had told his wife. And she had agreed. So he had gone to the other farms around and made friends with his neighbors. And asked if they had any animals they were willing to part with. The rooster had been his very first addition to the animal farm. He got the sheep next. She was a black sheep and was the most gentle creature he had ever owned. He took both of them home to create their habitats. He built a coop and knew he would add some hens for eggs and, of course, company for the rooster. Maybe they would even have chicks in the future. That made the farmer smile. Then he took the sheep into the barn and gave her the biggest stall, full of hay for comfort and food and a trough of water. She was so happy and at home that she laid down and went to sleep. The next morning the rooster woke her with a........ cock-a-doodle-do! She called out to the rooster "5 more minutes , please. I was having such a good dream!" He said, "Start your dream 5 minutes earlier tonight, because I always wake with the sunrise and you will too". They became quick friends.

Love Lost
Once upon a time, in a land far, far away there lived a witch. One day she was visited by a very, handsome, young prince, who was lost in her forest and looking for his princess. The witch invited him in to have a cup of tea and a snack, while she drew him a map and sent him on his way. As she watched him and drew the map to an enchanted cabin that she had at the edge of the forest, she fell more and more in love with this charming prince. She knew that he would never love her, but she wanted just 24 hours with him to try to get him to know the real person that she was instead of the witch that he saw. So she sent him to the other cabin with an apple and a wish for a safe journey to find all that he ever wanted. She watched him ride off with true love in her heart and a plan in her head. She drank a potion that made her into a beautiful princess, then waved her wand which landed her in her enchanted cabin. It was far enough into the woods, to make the prince think he was lost again, so he knocked on the door to ask directions. When she opened the door, his eyes got wide with amazement at the beauty before him. Instead of directions, he asked for a glass of water because he was so parched from such a long journey from his kingdom.
