Demon Hunter
The darkness enveloped me, affording me little view except for my immediate surroundings. The smell of rotten eggs permeated everything and made it all but impossible to breathe. There were noises coming from the darkness—sounds like screech owls, and snakes hissing; dogs growling.

July 17, 1981
(names have been changed for personal privacy) Since the breakup with George, I fell into a deep depression. I considered him to be the respite from my difficult and dreary life. Days went on for what seemed an eternity. Nights couldn’t come soon enough, and the mornings always came too soon. It was in my dreams that I found solace. The one thing I still carried in me was a good escape in those nighttime dreams. I was with George, and we were happy. The abuse never entered my dream life. It was as if God was saying, “You deserve a good night’s sleep. The days ahead will be long and hard.”

Night of Deception
There I sat in my old beat up ’58 Datsun pickup. It had a neon green body, with a broken taillight that I had covered in red tape. The light still worked, thank God, but here I was, faced with the newest dilemma of the day—a dead battery. At least that’s what I thought it was after I got out to take a look. I glanced up the highway, then back over what I had just covered. About thirty miles long, the stretch was.
