Ghost Dads
I didn't have a story book Father son relationship that any kid longs to have. Thankfully I didn’t have a nightmarish abusive relationship with him either. You could say we had a ghost relationship. My father was merely an acquaintance I was able to visit from time to time. You see my parents were married and then divorced less than a year’s time. Before the age of nine I had no idea who my father was. He never stopped by to visit or offer to take me to his place so I could see his place and could get to know one another. It seemed like he couldn’t even bother to pick up the phone and say, “Hi kiddo, how are you doing today?” Growing up it was just my mom and I, but I always wondered what my dad was like. Right around the time I turned nine my mom had enough of me asking about my dad. She was finally able to reach out to one of my aunts and she provided my mom the info needed to get a hold of my dad.

What is Love
There’s a beautiful pond down a couple of blocks from my house. I’ve lived in this town my whole life. My best friend Tommy and I would go to the pond every winter to skate and play hockey. I love playing hockey. I played from 2nd grade all the way to high school. I got nervous in high school and never tried out for the school team. Boy do I regret that decision.

Paw Patrol: The Movie
I was recently able to sit down with my 6 year old, and watch a movie he was waiting impatiently to be released. He was just about excited as I am for anything Marvel/Star Wars/Disney. Just what is his movie of choice, you ask? Well, it is a heart warming tale about a young boy and his team of six very helpful pups. In case you’re not a parent or have been under quarantine too long. You may have seen that lovable nickelodeon show about Ryder, Chase, Marshal, Rubble, Rocky, and of course Sky made their debut unto the big screen… or the small screen if you’re still scared to go out in public. “Paw Patrol: The Movie” was released on Friday, August 20th and is available to watch in certain theatres, or if you prefer the creature comforts of your home couch. It is also available to anyone who subscribes to Paramount+. As a parent who actually enjoys watching these kinds of movies with any of my kids. Or without them…shhh… I enjoyed this one so much I felt like taking a break from my fiction writing and offer up my first movie review. Another words… be gentle I am no Siskel or Ebert.

A Hunter's Legacy pt. 2
You can read part one here: https://vocal.media/fiction/a-hunter-s-legacy My head sunk, I can’t believe that my father was keeping secrets. He never told me what he was working on. I thought he always kept me informed of his cases and jobs he was working on. I turned to look at the package that was left. I tore off the brown paper to reveal a wooden box. I remember this box. My father kept this box on his clothes chest. I was never allowed to open it. It was his box of treasures. I almost feel guilty opening this box. He must have sent it to me for a reason. He must have known his digging was getting too dangerous.

A Hunter's Legacy
One could say it was a good sad day for a funeral. The clouds rolled in, as the droplets began to hit my face. I didn’t notice at first as my face was already wet from the tears. Everyone else had already left or in their carriages about to leave. I stood frozen, unable to move. Staring blankly at the head stone in front of me. The name of my father etched into its porous surface. It finally hit me all at once, and I dropped to my knees. Being all alone I couldn’t hold it in and started sobbing uncontrollably. I can’t believe my father is gone. All I had left of him was his last gun and belt. I embraced the belt tightly as my forehead rested on the stone tablet.

Free Doughnuts
I love doughnuts! All kinds from a simple glazed to a cream filled long john with sprinkles. My specific favorite seems to change from month to month depending on my moods. This month I am partial to the apple fritters. That warm apple cinnamon flavor covered in delicious icing. Oh man… They are so good! I usually go to my favorite bakery every morning before school for some sort of breakfast pastry.

Why the Rush
Little Jack was in a hurry to get home today. As soon as that school bell rang, he was on his feet and out the door. Running as fast as his little feet would take him. His parents finally bought him the new game all his friends were playing, and he couldn’t wait to try it. Jack barely looked around at the traffic or other people as he would run across streets. He zigged, zagged, in, and out of people walking along. He was too excited, and in too much of a hurry. He came across an alley. Suddenly, CRASH!!! Another young man cam running out of the alley also not paying much attention. Slamming right into little Jack, the two of them tumbled into the street. Jack’s head thumped across the pavement. The young man rolled into the front end of an auto. Luckily, the driver was paying attention and stopped in time to lessen the blow he took. The collision caused the two of them to drop their bags. Seemingly unphased by what just happened the young man grabbed his bag and hurried off as if he couldn’t be bothered by this accident that he helped create. The driver, concerned about what happened, got out of his car to see the young man run off. Not able to get a good description he turned his attention to Jack to see if he was ok. Jack got the brunt of the impact. Trying to get up he felt dizzy, and his vision was blurry. “Kid are you ok?” The driver now knelling in front of Jack assessing the damage. “My head hurts, and I feel dizzy.” Jack replied. He looked around for his school bag, and then again attempted to stand up. Instantly falling back down to a sitting position. Jack realized he was not doing well. “Hang on kid, looks like you hit you head rather good. Just sit here and relax. I already called 911, help should be here soon. You got a pretty nasty cut there.” Jack can now feel something warm running down his face. He raised his hand to feel the cause of this warmth. When he looked at his hand, he could see the blood. A young woman came over from the nearby dinner to help and brought over a towel to place on his head. “Here’s something for you until medics arrive.” Jack thought she had a nice voice. More soothing than then the gentleman who helped him out. Jack was thankful he was not alone. “What’s your name Hun? Can I call your mom or dad for you?” The woman went to grab her phone.

I am Kindhearted
My car stopped working about a week ago. With no money to fix it, I’ve been forced to walk. Cutting through the park lately has been some fun. You get a chance to meet some cool people. Today I happened to notice something under the bushes next a tree. I stopped to pick it up. It was a beat up old black book. There were no markings on the front or back, so I flipped through the pages quickly. It looked like it could’ve been someone’s journal. I put it in my bag, and continued my journey home.

Tragic Pasts
Travis is a kind old soul. Over the years he has been through a lot of tough times. Now that he is retired he likes to spend time at his local VFW bar hanging out with some of his veteran buddies. Although Travis never served in the military. He did have plenty of friends and family who did. He has witnessed everyone of them come back changed. For Travis hanging out with the Vets and making sure they feel apricated brightens his day. On this night he noticed a younger man sitting at the bar looking very depressed, sitting alone nursing a whiskey coke on ice. Travis hasn’t seen this man before. Concerned for this man, he walks up to him. “Excuse me brother, everything OK?” The stranger turns and looks up at Travis. “Why the fuck do you care?” Obviously in a grumpy mood, Travis is shocked at the greeting he just received. “Whoa, hold on there buddy. I noticed you looked a little troubled. Judging by your reaction I can assume I am correct. I just wanted to offer some kind words and possibly help if I can.” Surprised that Travis is still sitting next to him the stranger struggles to find some kinder words. “Look I appreciate the concern. And I mean this in the nicest way… GO AWAY!!” Reluctant to give up, Travis shrugs and simply says “Ok man, as you wish. I truly hope your evening goes better.” The stranger without a word raises his glass as if to offer a toast, then throws back what is left of his drink, slams the glass on the counter, and then turns to walk out of the bar. Shaken up a little by this Travis rejoins his friends.
