Long before smartphones and social media flooded our lives with selfies, the ancient Greeks and Romans wove tales of individuals whose obsession with their own image bordered on the tragic. Chief among these myths is the story of Narcissus, a figure of unparalleled beauty who roamed the earth in search of love. Yet, when he spurned the affections of the nymph Echo, his gaze fell upon his own reflection in a shimmering river, and he was ensnared by his own allure. Captivated by the image he saw, Narcissus was unable to tear himself away, ultimately meeting his demise as he drowned in the waters that mirrored his own visage. From the spot where he perished, a flower emerged, forever bearing his name – the Narcissus – a poignant reminder of the perils of excessive self-love.
