I believe the purpose of education is to expand our understanding of the world through investigation of many points of view on topics that are unknown in order to help us better understand what the world is like because then the world becomes easier to map. Education should expose different areas of life, content, and skills to aid in how the individuals within the class develop their approach to the world. Because no tool is more important than being able to help student’s build a map for their life and what kind of person they want to be in it. Therefore, education should assist students articulate their values and build upon their models of the world in order to best navigate the world for themselves.
Innovation; The Unknown Alliance Between Business and Government
Milton Friedman’s view in Capitalism And Freedom proposes the idea that government should exist in the market solely to maximize unconstrained economic freedom. Government intervention into the marketplace that limits or forces consumer decision-making cannot be justified. Friedman’s argument for market fundamentalism is seemingly at odds with the historical reality of the role of government in the United States. From state police powers, to Progressive Era reforms, through the New Deal government whether being state or federal has always shaped the contours of capitalism through political, social, and cultural change. Friedmans point of view differs from the consumer health and environmental protections era (1964-1977) and the rise of the idea of the developmental state. Friedman’s philosophy has guided the idea of market fundamentalism within the false notions of the invisible hand driving innovation instead of a combination of public and private sectors. This idea is negligent to the fact that government presence in the innovation economy acts as the only entity that can invest in certain sectors. The notion that the government shouldn’t pick winners is supplanted by the idea of the government supporting large, medium, and small firms to compete for the best technology.
Bands to Chiefdoms the Development of Modern Law
The legal systems for which people have created have depended on developments in civilization and human psychology. To trace back to the origins of our species is to understand that a formal legal code didn’t exist inherently in smaller hunter gatherer peoples. People have created laws that have developed alongside the growth of population and civilization. The development of laws has been founded upon different sources, behaviors, cultural norms, traditions, social interactions, and reasoning.
An American Reverie: Merle Haggard
Merle Haggard or as I still prefer to address him, “The Hag” is an artist that now unfortunately gone has imbued my life with a deeper connection to and reconciliation with life. Merle's many songs of longing, running, loving, and drinking ballads calls out as if every song struck into the core of America. Perhaps it’s because of his ability to not only penetrate the heart of being in his music and grasp the wide variety of thoughts, emotions, and actions everyone is likely to encounter throughout life. He paints a window and then with a guiding hand reaches out and pulls you into the expression of his music. In my opinion if you compiled all of The Hag’s music you would get a full picture of the depth and breadth of human existence. Perhaps the song of choice being, (I'm Gonna Paint Me) A Bed of Roses illuminates just how far out he can stretch beyond a country musician and into the depths of human being.
Psychological War & The Art of Deception
Nobody would ever confess to a crime they didn’t commit right? People wouldn’t ever lie about committing some abhorrent crime in which they were innocent. A still all too commonly held belief in society. A common misconception that doesn’t reveal the full art of deception and warfare on the human mind that occurs during the interrogation process. Every person has their breaking point on a spectrum of mental fortitude that varies. Again every single person can be convinced into conspiracy even if against themselves after a certain amount of psychological warfare has been waged against them.
