The Cabin in the Woods
The cabin in the woods had been abandoned for years, but one night, a candle burned in the window. Justin was the first to notice the dull, yellow flicker that created a bokeh effect on the cabin’s cold misty glass panes. Reflexively, he raised his right arm and pointed, directing Ana’s attention to what he had just seen. Ana froze. “But…but Wade said no one else lived out here,” she stammered. Justin could already feel the tingly feeling running down his spine. It was fear, but not just that. It was something more. It was a rush of excitement; of daring. He knew what he was going to do, and he also knew the rest of the group was going to be against it. There were six of them out here; all twenty-somethings. Dominic and Jojo were seniors at the college across town. But they were also dating, having met in math class two years prior when they were sophomores. Justin had been accepted by an ivy-league college out of town, but had decided against taking up the offer in favor of a fledging music career. He was also attracted to Ana; a sweet, shy and wide-eyed girl who he had met at the town’s music festival earlier in the year. He had convinced her to come on this trip with him and his friends. He had promised to “show her a good time.”

Fatherhood
Eighteen years it’s been. A long time ago in the grand scheme of my life; long enough that I struggle to remember what he looked like. He was not my father—although I would have no regrets if he were. He was my grandfather; my father’s father. His name was Papa; or so it seemed. Everyone called him that, but I only came to realize a few years after his death that it was just a title. Much the same way as “mummy” is used for mothers and “mama” for grandmothers. But I could not care less. He was, is, and would continue to be Papa to me; such was the influence he had on me in such a short time. In fact, it only lasted a little over two weeks; the time I spent with him just before his death. My parents would later tell me that it was in fact longer than that. They had also taken us—I and my two brothers—to our hometown when I was about three to see him. They said that his eyes lit up when he set his sights on me for the first time, in a way that they did not for my two older brothers. They said that he spontaneously took a liking to me that they had never seen for anyone else bar his wife; my grandmother.

The Skewered Pork Barbecue
Summer tastes like an abominably spiced-up, sizzling-hot pork barbecue to me. Interestingly, I do not remember how many times I have said that, but it is more than a few times. To be fair, summer also smells like a lot of other things to me; freshly-cut grass, salt water, suntan lotion, scorching sun on white sand, sun-bleached sheets on a cool bed, and scalloped potatoes—and I can barely believe the sheer coincidence between the first option in this essay prompt and my actual, real-life olfactory relationship to summertime. Oh, and how can I forget Shalimar; the favorite—and quite frankly, exclusive—fragrance of Mrs. Denali.

The Dragon lord of Valloria
Chapter one There weren’t always dragons in the valley. Valloria did not need them. One of five continents in the world of humans, Valloria had enjoyed a millennium of peace and prosperity. Its people were known for their industry, their devotion to customs of the land, and their reverence to the Lord of the Deep; the age-old deity of their ancestors. The realm of Valloria was home to three kingdoms, united for the majority of the realm’s existence under the rule of a single monarch; Toria of the house of Vikhran, whose seat of power was the Throne of Vallor. King Vikhran had direct rule over the kingdom of Vikhra, northernmost of Valloria, with the kingdoms of Baeloria and Babor; controlled by the noble houses of Joriah and Voss respectively, owing fealty to the Throne. Surrounded by the vast Balkan Sea, Valloria was bounded to the east by the continent Esteros, to the north east by Khalm, to the north by Noria, and to the west by Wessos. The smallest of all continents in the known world, Valloria had been the target of military colonization by Noria and Wessos at two key points in its history. The history books record both campaigns as colossal failures, thanks in no small part to Valloria’s geography.

Alerta
‘There weren’t any dragons in the valley!’ Alerta exclaimed. Now what I see is chaos, bloodshed, corruption, and lack of nationalism Alerta laments as she flashbacks to 85 years ago when the land she grew up in was lush and green. She recalls sunbathing on the lovely beach and caring less about what she will eat, wear or live as all these were catered for with less tolling. Oh! how I miss the days when life was simple… she hissed. What is independence when we still live in bondage? Alerta rhetorically asked herself. Edina walked into the sitting room and noticed Alerta speaking to herself. Are you speaking to yourself Alerta? Startled by the presence of her friend, Alerta quickly composed herself and said, ‘oh actually I was just thinking aloud, and nothing much. So, what are you doing here Edina?

Life expectancy
The perspective on life is always different from everyone. The perspective of two people are shared on the Boston massacre written by Thomas Preston and Deacon John Tudor. By the beginning of 1770 Tudor explains “there were four thousand British soldiers in Boston, a seaport with only 15,000 inhabitants. On the evening of March 5, crowds of day laborers, apprentices, and merchant sailors began to pelt British soldiers with snowballs and rocks. A shot rang out, and then several soldiers fired their weapons; when it was over, five civilians lay dead or dying, including Crispus Attucks, a mulatto merchant sailor. A firsthand account of the Boston massacre”. While Preston says “on Monday Evening the 5th current, a few Minutes after 9 O'Clock a most horrid murder was committed in King Street before the Customhouse by 8 or 9 Soldiers under the Command of Captain Preston draw from the Main Guard on the South side of the Townhouse. March 5th This unhappy affair began by Some Boys & young fellows throwing SnowBalls at the sentry placed at the Customhouse Door. On which 8 or 9 Soldiers Came to his assistance. Soon after a Number of people collected, when the Capt commanded the Soldiers to fire, which they did and 3 Men were Killed on the Spot & several Mortally Wounded. The Capt soon drew off his Soldiers up to the Main Guard, or the Consequences might have been terrible”.
