Dracula's Disco
God I love Halloween, as well as any excuse to dress up. This year, I haven't made my BIG costume yet (see the Midsommar dress from last year here), but my boyfriend and I wanted to go ahead and get creative! Stephen is a super talented photographer, and we always shoot together when either of us has a fun idea.

How I Made the Midsommar Dress
For Halloween, I love to go ALL OUT. This costume was no exception. I wanted to make the Midsommar May Queen dress from the moment I saw Ari Aster's film in all of it's psychedelic, horrific glory. I'm no stranger to making costumes and playing dress-up, but I knew this would be a serious undertaking. Most of my costume skills involve hot glue, and seeing as I sewed through my finger in Home Ec class during high school, I had to call on my mom for help to get started.

Songs for Spooky Season
I love Halloween. It's my favorite holiday. I always go all out on my costumes, spending hours hot gluing, adding sequins, cutting fabric, you name it. I've dressed as the Bride of Frankenstein, a sparkling fairy princess, Twin Peaks' Laura Palmer, an astronaut, and even beloved icon The Babadook. I once spent 10 hours painting a giant canvas backdrop into a Pentagram design for a witchcraft-themed Halloween party, and I've strung enough spider webs to cover a whole graveyard. So yeah, I invest some time into Halloween y'all. (I can't wait to share what my costume is this year, but that's for a later story!)

Plastic Cheese
Plastic cheese and Dollar General sheets. The smells of cigarette smoke, a karate dojo and summer melted together. Fights with my brother and lying to my mother, hiding the tattoo I got at 16. Fox News in the background, throwing up my dinner. I got my belly button pierced and was told I could be skinnier. Southern charm to everyone but us, someone's on the phone, can you kids just hush? A carton of Camels and a couple packs of Virginia Slims on the top of the fridge. "Close the front door, we can't afford to cool the whole ridge." 100-year-old photos with ghost eyes in the bathroom, tea stained doilies on top of the toilet. Plastic cheese on cheap white bread, peanut butter and jelly if you want that instead. Two hours to get to the bluest lake, but the boat almost flipped in the storm of '98. Popeye the Sailor Man being sung by Dad - I think it was the most fun we ever had. Plastic cheese and Home Alone, Christmas in the basement - photos we didn't feel like taking. Home isn't really a poem, and I'm not really a poet. Home is how you feel - not perfect, but whole.

Sublimation
Anyone else would rejoice this morning. Waking up to the notification that you've been picked by the Federation means more than the status itself - it means money, security, and the coming of more luxury and high technology than you could ever dream. It means you have been Chosen.

Collaging My Creativity
I picked up collaging last year, creating mood boards through 2020 to motivate and inspire me. I'm a digital photographer, so the bulk of my creative work is all done in a camera and on my laptop, then posted to the digital world of Instagram and Pinterest. Collaging started as a hodge-podge, throw-it-together hobby, and really helped me be more hands-on with my creative flow, giving me a break that felt different from my daily routine. It has developed into what is now a very intentional, soul soothing craft time that both whisks me away and brings me into the present moment.

Songs To Take A Bath To
My favorite way to unwind is by taking a long bath. There's nothing more luxuriating to me than soaking in a tub of hot water with bubbles, bath salts, a few drops of eucalyptus oil, my favorite facewash, a glass of wine, the works. I take this pastime very seriously, ending most days with the lights off, candles lit and music on.

Sublimated

Home is Mom
There isn't much to say about Greenbrier, Tennessee. It has one stoplight, a Sonic, and some farmland. There are hundreds of towns exactly like it across the state, heck even the whole country. But going home used to trigger me, as it's also the place where my family nearly cracked after a car accident left my brother in a wheelchair for life.

My Path to Wellness
When I think of a resolution, it feels like an ending. A resolve to something. But as human beings, are we ever really fully resolved? I feel like I'm always evolving instead. I like to view my wellness as an ever expanding, ever growing, living, breathing thing.
