What Supporting Small Business Means to Me
In the land of technology and social media we live in, we all have friends that run small businesses. Some of them are contractors or handymen. Some of them run with the MLM businesses and do well. Others post their crafts and try to make a little side income doing something they love. Heck some of us write articles and stories we are convinced will never be read, but we write them anyway.

Mirror Lake
Callie stretched out on her paddleboard in the warm sun. The lake water rocked her gently and the sun was warm on her skin. This was going to be one of the last warm days to enjoy the lake before the fall chill set it. The season had been a long one, going all the way into the first week of October. Still, she wished summer would stretch on. She hated the cold and foggy days winter rolled in. They were so claustrophobic.

Covidland
We’ve been surviving in Covidland for almost two years now. The mixed information and politicized agendas have forced the citizens of the nations into a divide. In the United States, we have always stood behind our God-given freedoms and our constitution. Now in Covidland, these freedoms are being threatened. Our already critically stressed healthcare system is on the verge of collapse.

Piper's Dream
“Piper, bring me that basket. Yes, that one. Good. Now follow me and help me get these herbs in to dry.” Her grandmother GG called to her from the middle of the garden. The sun was filtering through the trees in beautiful golden rays. Her large, floppy hat hid her grey curls; but her pale green eyes shown with laughter. Even the lines of aging could not dull her vivacious nature.

Old Man Thatcher's Barn
Moonlight filtered in through the gaps in the boards of the ancient barn. Dust stirred in the breeze and danced through the beams. Squeaks and groans escaped the old boards making goosebumps rise along Lily’s arms despite the late august heat. The abandoned farm equipment threw violent-shaped shadows that danced menacingly with the sorrowful song of the barn wood. A shiver ran down her spine as she heard something stir the hay and wheat that was strewn around the old dirt floor. She held her breath and tried to make herself even smaller in what was left of the stall she hid behind.

Stitch-by-Stitch
Crochet found me in a dark time in my life. I was working at a bar that was the last to close in our small town. Inevitably everyone made their way there at the end of the night when they were the least reasonable and the most intoxicated. It was not quite so bad, until they opened the casino and cut my bouncer as well. That brought in a whole new crowd and even later hours for me. On top of the late hours at the bar, I also cut hair a couple times a week at a local salon. Keeping in mind, that this is all while I was also going to school full time taking prerequisite courses for the nursing program. It was a full-time load filled with science courses which include labs and fast-paced tests. And in the mix, I began dating a man, who all too soon became my fiancé.

We are the class
Below is an open letter I wrote to my class on November 26th 2020. We started the nursing program, a goal many of us had spent years of prerequisites working up to, mid-pandemic. This in-class program had to switch to a majority online program over night. As the class of 2022 we had no idea what we were getting into or how things were “supposed” to go. In fact, we did not even know if we would be allowed to have clinical rotations with all the Covid restrictions in place. I know online school affected many more than just my class and I hope this inspires others to keep pushing through these uncharted times.

Un-vax
Jani walked the deserted streets with an eye to the empty windows above. She still hadn't gotten used to the feeling of silence. She longed for the busy buzz of life; empty chatter, horns honking, even sirens. Instead, the cars were gravestones scattered through the streets, the windows quiet mourners watching over them. Cinder let out a yip and nosed her loose hand. The blue heeler was her only friend since the world had become this quiet tomb.
