Happenstance
Chapter 1 Despite the rain and chill in the night air, a young woman walks down the street, oblivious, as her mind is bathed in “warm sunshine” because her boyfriend has proposed to her. She is feeling so elated that she can’t help but stop and stare at the beautiful ring on her finger every minute or two, and at the next street light, she pauses yet again to get another look.

Death and Taxes
They say the only sure things in life are Death and Taxes, but I'm proof that there are no sure things in life... My story begins and ends on the Monroe Estate, a large sprawling mansion located in Long Island, New York, owned by my father Benjamin Monroe; a self-made billionaire. Needless to say, living up to my father's expectations was literally impossible. How do you compete or prove yourself competent to a man who dragged himself out of the gutters, to be one of the wealthiest, successful, and powerful businessmen in the United States?

The Mystery of Pumpkin Patch Bridge
Chapter 1 I sat on my bike, staring at the infamous bridge where it was rumored that anyone who dared to cross would simply vanish into thin air; except for me, it wasn’t just a rumor. I had seen it happen with my own eyes, as my best friend, Maureen, had disappeared when she had attempted to cross the bridge. Maureen hadn’t wanted to go across--everyone in town was afraid to--but I had dared her, as children often do.

Little Black Book
Chapter 1 Scrolling through Facebook, I see a writing contest ad. A $20,000 prize stands out in large digits, catching my eye. I scroll past, and then a few moments later begin to wonder if it's worth checking out. I go back and click on the link. The rules look simple enough. So, where's the catch? I start reading through the rules, looking for the catch.
