Abode of Love
Dry autumn leaves crunch under my foot as I make my way through the overgrown and unkempt garden leading to an old apartment building complex. I climb the stairs slowly, one floor after the other, till I step into the hallway that leads to my old apartment. I stop outside the familiar door, wondering how come I’d never come back to live in Pune, despite it being the place where I’d spent formative years of my life and my parents, who’d spent a quarter of a century here. During the early days after I’d moved out of the apartment, I did come back but my visits were always short and nothing more than layovers. Standing outside the door now, years later, I let the thought sink in: it is my house that holds decades’ worth of my family’s memories. My heart feels heavy as my memories of the place poke at my mind to be set free.
Giggles and Cuddles
Lollipop opens up her eyes to a new day, to the bright yellow sun playing peekaboo with the clouds, its warm rays streaming in through the window and caressing her face tenderly. She greets the day with a heartfelt smile, unbothered by the wet sheets and the soggy night dress clinging to her legs. She rolls out of bed, sending her stuffed doll and blanket to the floor. A mildly rancid smell permeates the room and she stops, making her way to the restroom. Her damp nightdress ends up on the floor as she goes, her footsteps light and quick on the cool morning floor. The sound of running water is loud in the tranquil early morning hours. The birds coo in their nest outside the window, nudging each other awake as the sky turns into beautiful shades of bronze, yellow and orange.
Old Silver Anklets
She was sitting on the edge of the bed. Bright fluorescent lights lit up the entire room, causing the light to bounce from her worn-out mirror and fall on her old frame. Navy blue curtains adorned with silver motifs were drawn close over the locked windows, giving the room a depressing feel.
