No Time to Die
For over sixty years the character of James Bond has been a cultural icon of young men everywhere. The glamorous lifestyle, the thrills of espionage, the music and the cars have integrated themselves into the popular consciousness. In 2021 we got the finale of the Daniel Craig iteration of James Bond directed by Cary Joji Fukunaga. No Time to Die is the final hurrah of the contemporary Bond series that I think leaves the future of the franchise and the character in a strange limbo.

Red Tide
We all fear the deep darkness of the ocean. It is an unexplored frontier that stirs the imagination. Yet, there are stories of ancient monsters. Cruel bloodthirsty creatures that inhabit not just the depths of the deep blue but the darkest parts of our imagination. I come here to tell you a story, a sort of cautionary tale of the island of Miskatonic. It was fifty miles from Nantucket and one hundred miles from the New England Coast. The island was a home for a small whaling fleet in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries but in the early 20th century it was abandoned. Nobody knew with certainty why it was abandoned but many claim that a monster from the depths of the Atlantic had claimed the island as its resting place. Many people who tried to return to the island disappeared or were found dead under mysterious circumstances.

The New Socialism
The political binary of American politics has been irreversibly changed. The conservative faction (Republicans) have embraced borderline fascist tendencies, rampant campaigns of misinformation and outright xenophobic contempt while the Democrats masquerade their contempt for the working classes under identity politics. Both sides have been bought and sold by the capitalist elite. Essentially this turns politics into a rich man's game. The laboring classes both lower and middle have become pawns in a political chessboard. We only exist to serve and consume what the capitalist class produces.

No More Lonely Friends
For a vast majority of millennials the pandemic has upended our social lives. Friendships that you had from childhood are broken, high-school friends may have forgotten you and long distance friendships with people you met in college are stressful to maintain. It's hard and certainly terrifying to think that the possibility of being alone is likely. Relationships drift apart and friendships can end over the most petty and insignificant reasons. This is how the group No More Lonely Friends began. The story of Marissa Meizz and how she started the movement was told in the New York Times. She started with a picnic in Central Park that began an expansion nationwide as she received more attention from social media.

Marvel's Magic
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings is deserving of every accolade it gets. It's a beautiful film that pays tribute to the martial arts films of the past while also reinventing the genre for a modern audience. Having seen it twice it is visual poetry. Destin Daniel Cretton took what could have been a very cliché heavy film and turned it into a relatable family story. Marvel has an amazing way of taking their obscure characters and shaping them into remarkable figures. Shang-Chi even by the standards of comics is very under the radar. This film is an amazing exploration into culture and dynamic storytelling that is different from any of the Marvel films of the past thirteen years.
