Geopolitics of Climate Change
Twenty of the hottest years ever recorded have happened in the past twenty-one years. Wildfire seasons, droughts, floods, hurricanes are already breaching their records year after year. These extreme weather events are also getting more and more difficult to predict, both, spatially as well as in terms of their time-frames. They cause huge damages to life and property and have proven to be very expensive for countries. These extreme weather events, however, are only a glimpse into an ominous future. What's bothering governments more are the rapidly changing climatic conditions that in turn affect agriculture, resources, trade, and infrastructure projects. All of these concerns are driving climate action plans and this is where geopolitics comes in. As climate change and climate action gain more and more traction, the world is set to witness significant changes in conventional geopolitics. For instance, as countries are reducing their oil and gas dependence, petrostates are scrambling to diversify their economies and brace for a new normal.

Finance, Sustainability and a Summer Fling
In May 2020, after having exhausted almost all major hobbies that I had always wanted to explore, be it Cooking, Driving, learning Mandarin, or revising the Harmonium, I decided to delve into something that’s conventionally more productive. I decided to try Finance. Now, I always knew a few things about markets, financial statements, and the different domains within the industry, but with the mammoth of a field that Finance is, there was always some room to explore. So I signed up for a couple of fundamental courses to brush up on some topics and boy, was I hooked! After spending a couple of more months trying to cook and drive and learn Mandarin, and reading bits and pieces of market-related news occasionally, it was finally time to prepare for a forthcoming internship season.

Carbon Neutrality 101: When Dunder Mifflin Went Carbon Neutral
Every week, there's a host of companies, cities, and countries announcing their commitment to reducing their net carbon emissions within a certain timeframe. With the threats of climate change getting more and more apparent with frequent forest fires, cyclones, changing rain patterns, and the likes, the pressure on organizations to curb their contribution to climate change is more than ever. What happens when Dunder Mifflin Scranton sit down to brainstorm on ways to go carbon neutral? If you haven’t watched The Office (the American one, to be more specific), you might wanna skip to the 4th paragraph.

Careers in Sustainability
The time I decided to pursue Environmental Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay (I’ve written about it in a previous article), amidst all the other concerns, a major one was with regards to the career opportunities that this field has to offer. A large number of people whom I had spoken to were of the opinion that this field is not just nascent, but also rather niche which can significantly restrict my career opportunities. 3 years into my major, I can confidently say that a majority of those concerns were unfounded. The multidisciplinary nature of our course work, and environment and sustainability, as a sector, opens up a wide range of opportunities. To offer a perspective, my major has core courses ranging from the study of microbial cell cycles and biotechnology for wastewater treatment to writing python and MATLAB codes for environmental data analysis of air pollution in Delhi!

How I Met My Major
Not everything in life goes as per plans. Infact, hardly anything does. From reading about why plastics are bad, as a 3rd grader to pursuing a major in Environmental Science and Engineering at IIT Bombay, my 21 year old life has definitely come full circle and how!
