The Girl in the Marigolds
The question was the same every night, yet Jessa never grew weary of hearing it. She stood in a garden of marigolds, surrounded by bright bursts of yellows, oranges and reds. It looked as if they stood in a garden on fire, just like her heart was on fire with the want to let Matthew take her pain and loneliness away. She wore her favorite lavender dress, blowing gently in the cool evening breeze, while the rough flagstones scraped lightly on her bare feet. Jessa’s curtain of auburn hair shone in the fading sunlight like another pillar of flame among the blazing marigolds. Her hand itched to at last close that distance, but her overwhelming fear once again held it in place. Her mind was torn between this moment with Matthew and the moments over the past year that bred these doubts. Like flashes of scenes from movies, Matthew here in this garden, then the wreck that killed her parents. Matthew here in this garden, and then her friends telling her she was just too difficult to be around and not “fun” anymore.
