Whispering Pines Inn
Emerald The relentless downpour mercilessly beats against the windshield, forming a thick, translucent curtain that distorts my view of the road. My wipers are on but they struggle to keep up with the onslaught of raindrops. As someone who has always struggles with night vision, I had made the cautious decision to exit the highway when the rain started about an hour ago. Seeking refuge from the storm, I pulled off at a small gas station and took the opportunity to fill up my car before going inside to use the bathroom and grab some snacks. When I was ready to continue my journey, I changed my GPS route to avoid the dangerously slick interstate, instead opting for the winding city streets and deserted backroad highways that offered slightly better visibility in the downpour.

Looking at the clock, I see it’s almost 10 a.m. I have called my handler every hour on the hour since six o’clock this morning. Four hours, that’s the amount of time I must give them to call me back. At the end of the fourth hour, I’m supposed to call the back-up line. I hate calling the back-up line. I’ve never been given good news when I’ve had to use it.

Prologue (Author's POV) Everyone has a dream. Some dreams are the same, however, most are different. In Ava Schmidt's case she only ever dreamed of one thing, and that was for someone to love her. Cowering under the blanket and trying hard not to cry, she hid from those around her, not wanting to be weak, even though she knew she was. At least, that is what she has always told by the people that are supposed to love her. Strangers didn’t understand how this 9-year-old could be so grown up for her age, but they didn’t know that her family has been treating her as their slave and personal punching bag since she was four years old. She has been called every name a child could imagine, and even some things that she didn’t quite understand, but she knew one thing for certain: no one has ever told her that they loved her.

Chapter 1 Present Day There weren’t always dragons in the Valley. My Gran said the Valley used to be green and lush, with rolling hills covered in wildflowers. But all that changed when the dragons arrived. They descended on the Valley like a blanket of darkness, bringing with them fear and destruction. There were stories about how they appeared: some say their leader was conceived somewhere nearby, and they followed his call; others suggested it was an ancient magic spell that summoned them from some far-off place. Whatever their origin, they took over the Valley, roosting on mountaintops and scorching the land with their fiery breath.
