A Good Night
“Here you go, Lil Bit,” the biker said as he handed over the small plastic baggy. “Since you been such a good friend to my boy, you can have these for free. The rest of you fuckers hand over twenty-five bucks!” The big-bellied man roared with laughter as the rest of the group started pulling out their cash.
Thank Your Custodian
I know it's easy for you to pass us by without a smile or a nod. We tend to blend in even with the massive cart of chemicals, brooms, trash bags, etc. We're just the people in the dingy grey uniform or casual shorts and t-shirts. The people with no degrees, tattoos, we don't speak as well as you, and we're only here to take out your trash.
Blood on the Snow
Skogul watched as her only remaining child faded into the driving snow. The small girl stumbled and skidded along the ridge of the frozen pond before finally disappearing into the trees. With the shaft of an arrow stuck firm between her shoulder blades, there was no way for Skogul to sigh with relief.
Four of us sat in my girlfriend’s room as she showed off her latest weapon, a longbow made by her dad. It wasn’t anything special, he wasn’t a master craftsman or anything, but it was still pretty cool. As she demonstrated the draw, her form nearly perfect as she shakily pulled the string back to her ear, an idea sparked like a candle in my mind.
