The Pear Tree
The courtyard was buzzing with life as Eren sat at his window. His room was high up, and he had a clear view of everybody going about their business, unaware that they were being watched. There was Lottie sitting at the fountain, singing to a girl as she braided her long hair, and on the other side of the fountain, a multitude of doves ate a handful of breadcrumbs as a young man painted a picture of them. Eren recognized him. It was his friend, Solomon, who was trying to get into a prestigious art school. Across from them, an acquaintance named Jonas did stretches before running laps around the courtyard to prepare for an upcoming race. There were others – some familiar and others foreign – that made up the vibrant collection of people in the beautiful courtyard, and with the diverse group came an array of hobbies that Eren loved to observe before running errands in the neighboring town.

A Midwinter Dream
The sky was a blinding white, like it had been bleached by the faraway sun, and as Jack let out a deep breath, he could see it against the cold air. He blew again, amused by the sight of it, before pulling his red scarf over the lower half of his face. That winter was colder than most, and as he walked hand in hand with his mother, the only thing that he could focus on was the thick glittery snow. It was beautiful to him.

A Game of Tag
There was barely any movement on the interstate as Zeke sat in the backseat flipping through his comics. It was late in the evening, and except for when they would occasionally pass beneath the lights, was too dark for him to read any of the pages. He closed it and let out a sigh. His mother was in the driving seat and as usual, was grumbling about the traffic.

A Different Kind of Bull
His aunts and uncles whispered about him in hushed tones throughout the birthday party. He was a sensitive child, one that was always prone to crying, and with his change in behavior, he quickly became the laughing stock to everyone in his grade. He couldn’t help it. Because of his sudden fear of bulls, he now stood out in embarrassing ways, and it wasn’t long before he became known to them as Angus. The children mocked him with that name at any chance that came up, and the poor boy just remained quiet about his nickname. The sad thing was that he actually loved animals, including bulls, but still, he was now afraid of the massive beasts.

Princess Marigold
“Princess Marigold.” That is what they called her. It wasn’t her nickname until one day when they had gone to visit her great-aunt for the summer. The old woman lived far away in a house on the outskirts of the forest, and all of the neighboring houses were spread out from each other a great distance. As their car drove by endless fields, she could already feel dread, but when they eventually reached the house, she looked out of the window and was amazed by what she saw.
