A Death Punished
Her Through the haze of pain from my wounded chest pressing against the unyielding ground, I am aware of other things. The wet leaves covering the forest ground are sticking to my cheek. I can taste the wet dirt in my mouth as I fight for every breath I take. Every gasp brings fresh tears to my eyes, knowing that each time I exhale means I die a little more. I inhale again and for that second I am relieved that I’m not dead yet. The sticky wetness I feel on my chest is not from the leaves, though. It is my own blood.
