The Aurora
The stars twinkle at Ellie, and, for the first time in a long time, she smiles. Over the years, they have become her friends. In the window the embossed letters on her uniform are reflected back at her - The Aurora. It was one of the many things she was excited about the ship before she boarded, meaning new dawn. Staring out into the galaxy, she still believes that to be an apt name, that there are endless possibilities lying ahead of her, all bright and exciting. Particularly tonight.

Jacob
Ben is ten. He likes that this rhymes with his name, and that it is double digits, meaning his grandmother has now replaced his old title of ‘growing boy’ with the far superior ‘young man’. He is staying with her for the summer, while the school holidays dance past and his Mum goes to work. It is one of his favourite times of the year. Gran has been looking after him every summer since he can remember, plastering up his cuts and feeding him treats he’s not allowed at home. She is his summer escape - the queen of the forest outside and champion of avoiding lava on the living room floor. This holiday has whirled past, and already next week he is expected back at school.

Where the Gardens Aren't Watered
Rita’s throat burns. She sits slumped back against a low brick wall of someone’s front garden, her exhausted legs stretched out on the pavement. This area of the city is unfamiliar, though what matters is the skyscrapers are long behind her. Here the roads are lined with terraced houses and well-groomed but small gardens, designed to house families that need to commute to offices further in. Once, there might have been the sounds of wildlife, but it is a relief that today there is not even the wind. The silence means she is alone.
